“Overheating” is an often misused term to describe an iPhone that is warm. When you charge your iPhone, especially fast charging which would occur if you use the original charger, it is normal for it to get warm. Not all the energy when charging goes into the battery, some of it exerts in the form of heat. If your iPhone were overheating, it would pause charging due to the temperature and display a “Charging On Hold” message, which typically occurs at 80%. This is to prevent the iPhone’s internals from overheating and damaging. We all get this message and there’s nothing to do about it except make sure your iPhone’s in a cool place when charging and not in use, which will lower the frequency of this message.

Are you receiving a message on your phone that it has overheated and unable to be used? Sensors in the phone will turn off the phone when the temperature has exceeded its operating levels.

If your iPhone or iPad gets too hot or too cold - Apple Support

When charging, you are likely to see a message that charging is on hold to allow the phone to cool down. This is normal as your phone fast charges to 80%, which generates heat, and after it cools down it will slow charge to 100% to protect your battery.

As for your phone getting warm/hot while charging, yes that is expected and the temperature will increase if you are doing any processor intensive tasks while it is charging. If it get's too hot the phone will protect itself and you will be notified.
