Why is the App Store telling me to add a payment method?

I was going to download docs on the App Store today, however a payment method popped up and asked for verification, however all payments are up to date, I haven’t downloaded any apps this past month, support

The App Store may ask you to add or verify a payment method even if you are downloading a free app like Google Docs. This can happen for several reasons:

  1. Unpaid balance – You might have a small unpaid balance from a previous purchase (including subscriptions).
  2. Family Sharing – If you're part of Family Sharing, the organizer’s payment method may need verification.
  3. New Apple ID – If your Apple ID is new or hasn’t been used to download anything before, Apple may require a payment method for verification.
  4. App Store settings – Sometimes Apple requires payment info for identity verification, even for free apps.


You can try the following:

Go to Settings > Apple ID > Payment & Shipping to check and update your payment method.

If everything looks correct and there’s no balance, try signing out and back into your Apple ID.

If the issue continues, contact Apple Support directly for help.
