Page numbers not working in Microsoft Word on Macbook Air after Sequoia 15.6 update

Since upgrading my Macbook Air to Sequoia 15.6, Word no longer allows or registers page numbers in documents. Has anyone else seen this? I have uninstalled and reinstalled Word.

You might be starting to find out the answer yourself! Your original post concerned me because I use several Macs on 15.6 OS and it made me worry about this feature not working. However when I checked, the page numbers feature was working on all of them.

The fact that on another Mac that you have on your network it also works likely means there is something unique about the Mac where it doesn't work. Two standard troubleshooting steps:

  • Boot into Safe Mode. See if Word works properly. Then reboot normally and test.
  • Create a new user. Log out and log in as the new user and test.

If the mystery still remains, I suggest you make use of the free Etrecheck diagnostic and post here. It is possible that something installed on the problem Mac is causing the issue:

I also just tested using Insert menu > Page numbers... and had no issues with creating page numbers with Word 16.99.2, even on docs created with much older versions of Word. There is a "Check for updates" command under Word's Help menu. See if you need to update Office.

Are you running and anti-virus software or so-called "cleaning" apps. What about after-market font managers?

Owl's advice to work with the Microsoft community on this is wise because there are fewer Office users here than one might expect. Office questions can linger a while without getting effective help here.
