I never saw a screen like that before

so it turns the security update on
how then does the IOS update get turned on too?

That is the confirmation screen following any iOS update to let you know the update was successful. Like most users, you probably just clicked continue without reading any of the information on that screen. It will turn on both Security Updates AND iOS Updates after the install and like the screen says, it is up to you to go into Settings and turn those off. That will prevent a future iOS update. I do suspect at one time you did turn it Off, but a manual update was performed that turned it back on and were unaware that happened as stated in the update confirmation screen.

The iOS update is the version number like 18.6 and if a Security Update is applied, it will be followed by a letter as seen in the example provided in the link. That could look something like 18.6 (a).

"The FACTS is, whether you like or not, with Automatic Updates off, your phone won't update. When you manually update your phone the next time, a notification will tell you Automatic Updates are now on and YOU have to go into Settings again, to turn them off. NOTHING is going to change this, no matter how many people you ask."

OK, I believe apple wants something like that to happen

let's put that on the support pages

so those 3 apple support people won't get it wrong again.

why is it not documented?

changing a users choice without asking is a pretty big deal in my book

So, if we understand correctly, you tapped continue after seeing that screen, which would be the normal thing to do. But since it also told you that going forward, automatic updates would be on going forward, it's then up to you to go back into settings and turn off the switches if you don't want your phone to update automatically. And you'll need to do this every time.

No one has asked you, but WHY do you want to skip updates, which more often than not provide security patches, designed to keep your data and phone safe? I think you'll find that most of us senior members of the forum, install updates immediately when they are released. The data on my devices is way too important to be compromised, IMHO. Simply said, staying up to date with updates is the best way to protect your phone.

By default, your device automatically applies Rapid Security Responses. If necessary, you'll be prompted to restart your device. To check your device settings:

Correct, by default they will be installed automatically. If you do not want that to be the case, then you have to turn it off. After you manually update, you will have to go back into Settings and turn it back off if that is what you want. You have to take that explicit action to turn off the default setting of the last update that you performed. That is seen on the Software Update Complete screen that was posted, yet continues to be ignored.

The option for automatically installing the Rapid Security Responses was added in iOS 16.4.1.

So I screwed up my system upgrading in IOS 16

it turned it on without me

and moved me to IOS 17 I guess.

I am "systems analyst" for 3 iPhones

they must be in sync

or I would go crazy

I did not turn it on 3 times.

my daughter has attested to it, no automatic update

How about the truth.
iPhone users MUST upgrade
there is no way to NOT upgrade.

here are my settings
clearly impossible because you MUST accept the Security Updates
which AUTOMATICALLY turns on IOS updates.

i expect sometime around midnight
my iPhone settings will be corrected.

This is not a dead horse
but it certainly stinks like one.

The truth is you are arguing with only other users on this user to user only forum. We aren't Apple. We can't speak for Apple. Everyone has tried to help you with your question. Yet you keep arguing with other users. If you don't like how Apple has implemented Automatic Updates, complain to Apple. This isn't a complain to Apple forum. Apple doesn't participate here, nor read here for user feedback.

You lost me here

"both will be turned on after an update."

News to me,

since when?

I just learned about RSR today

and I guess I triggered it with some IOS 16 update

I have been updating since IOS 7 (?)

3 phones every update

IOS update never reset itself that I can recall.

like I said not a fan

Always seemed to break iTunes iPhone link for backup.

Do you have a link that says update resets IOS update?

Every update resets automatic update setting?

sorry, I'm from Missouri ; )

"Once you complete the update, you'll see a prompt informing you that, as part of the update, the company has enabled automatic updates on your device, even if you had previously switched them off. This means that, unless you do something, Apple will start downloading and installing future software updates to your devices on its own."

this is from a recent article I found online.

the article is discussing exactly what we have been discussing today.

I had posted the link

but the moderator found parts of the article to be objectionable.

I am sure you can find this article for yourselves

and make your own judgement.

Very interesting, he even ran a test to verify results.
