I never saw a screen like that before

so it turns the security update on
how then does the IOS update get turned on too?

That is the confirmation screen following any iOS update to let you know the update was successful. Like most users, you probably just clicked continue without reading any of the information on that screen. It will turn on both Security Updates AND iOS Updates after the install and like the screen says, it is up to you to go into Settings and turn those off. That will prevent a future iOS update. I do suspect at one time you did turn it Off, but a manual update was performed that turned it back on and were unaware that happened as stated in the update confirmation screen.

The iOS update is the version number like 18.6 and if a Security Update is applied, it will be followed by a letter as seen in the example provided in the link. That could look something like 18.6 (a).

My screen said, I quote:

the iPhone was asking if I wanted to continue with the SETUP
You know pick a floating language etc. etc.

the screen you are so proud of has never been on my iPhone.

and why the article could not be linked here?

WHY are you continuing your crusade here with other users? What part of this is a user to user ONLY forum don't you understand, where no one here works for Apple, is associated with Apple and can't speak for Apple?

And if you had a link removed, it was removed by moderators and we can't speak for them either. But things are removed when they violate the Terms of Use you agreed to when you joined the forum.

There is truly no reason to continue your crusade here. We can't help you. We can't change anything about how Apple does anything. I provided a link earlier you can use to share your thoughts with Apple. Continuing to complain here is pointless and will get you nothing.

MY SUMMARY IS INCORRECT

There is NOTHING in the Apple support web pages
that takes user choice out of setting software update settings.

the "screenshot" is contradicted by the apple support pages.

Sigh........what part of this is a user to user only forum don't you get? We have told you repeatedly this, yet you keep posting on this topic, when no one else seems to care. This is my last comment on this. If you don't like how Apple does updates, tell Apple. Continuing to complain about this here is simply, utterly, totally, completely pointless. For the last time, use this link if you want Apple to hear you --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple

You can of course keep up your crusade. But I along with the other senior members of this forum, will surely ignore further posts you make.

I am not asking you to change anything

I would like for someone to show me
in the apple support pages

where it says I cannot set the software update choices
any way I want
or
where it says apple does not allow.

do you think the latter is true?
why?

Why do you think we as users, have ANY responsibility to search anything for you? You're just sadly, unapologetically wasting our time. If you want confirmation, we've told you to contact Apple. We don't get paid anything to research anything for users.

These two things were shared with me by community fellows:

The "Continue" * panel

and

this link to the SRS software update option

About Rapid Security Responses for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS - Apple Support

I have just marked these as helpful.

I thought they both supported the idea that

The newly added SRS software update option was MANDATORY

(not an option at all).

I have never seen the "Continue" * panel

nothing more to be done there

but anyone can access the apple support pages.

I saw that the archive has 85 snapshots of those pages

beginning in December 2023 up to present.

I thought maybe  these pages had changed since the beginning

and sought to see what and when.

I was surprised to see they had not changed at all.

So I decided to look at it more closely.

I was surprised to find that it described the

SRS software update option was TOTALLY OPTIONAL.

I now plan to inform the apple webmaster that these pages

are likely incorrect and ask him to please update them

so apple users are not misinformed.

Will keep you posted.

Pretty much no way to contact webmaster about pages.

left feedback above.

called support have a case number

first level could find nothing in his scripts

set up phone

for what it's worth she said no update without permission

she send off somewhere ( >null)

maybe they will get back …

I told them I am only interested

in updating web page

Thanks

but still

"If you manually updated iOS and

have RSR and iOS updated turned off,

both of those settings will be turned on"

how does that make any sense?

you manually update and that turns on automatic updates

I have 3 iPhones 4 iPads

I have never seen the "Continue" * panel

miss once maybe, twice careless, but 6 times, I don't think so

and where is this behavior documented

the SRS page says nothing like it at all

the article I referenced used the word "sneaky"

probably that's what got it kicked out

but how would you describe

you manually update and that turns on automatic updates

Aug 14, 2025 1:33 PM in response to Mac Jim ID

I just have to disagree

NOBODY BUT NOBODY

manually downloads and installs an update

expecting it will turn subsequent updates on automatic.

it just does not follow

it is …

and we are still unable to point to this behavior documented anywhere on the support pages

just an ephemeral ghost of a warning that flashes by

the SRS webpage would have been the perfect spot to document

but instead it emphasizes CHOICE

not choose manual and get automatic.

  • "and we are still unable to point to this behavior documented anywhere on the support pages

just an ephemeral ghost of a warning that flashes by"

It is documented on the actual device after it has been updated. That is the best place to let users know that further updates will be done automatically unless changed by you. Why would it be better to not tell the user after the update and have them search for the answer on a Support Page.

The page certainly does not flash by and requires user interaction to press the "Continue" button. I can't help the fact that you did not see this page after the update, as it has been documented here in the Screenshots and also on the lifehacker page you referenced. The only way it would flash by is if a user tapped "Continue" without reading anything on the page. It is not a long read and simply says: "Future software updates will be automatically downloaded and installed for you as they are released. You can manage this in Software Update settings."

  • "the SRS webpage would have been the perfect spot to document"

Why? There has not been an RSR update since 2023 and that is not what turns on Automatic Updates.
