Sudden disappearance of contacts on iPhone

I just read through a thread about other people experiencing this — and the solutions given, which were syncing the iCloud contacts off and on, and restoring a backup, I've already tried. Still, I have missing contacts. One of which I entered just this morning, so I know it has just happened today — hours ago. I don't know HOW MANY contacts have been deleted because unless I search for someone and can't find them, then I don't know. I do know two of my "favorites" have no names and a handful of text messages now have no names. This is really frustrating because I save more than just phone numbers in my contacts. There might be addresses, emails, gate codes, zoom links, and so on. This is important information. I can't find any other methods for recovery or an answer as to why this suddenly happened. Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Sounds frustrating, especially since you’ve already tried the main iCloud synch steps. If contacts have suddenly disappeared, it’s probably due to a sync source issue rather than deletion. Here are some tips:

Go to Settings > Contacts > Accounts and check if you have multiple accounts (iCloud, Gmail, Outlook, etc.) Sometimes contacts are stored in a different account, and toggling iCloud wont affect those. Turn each account’s “Contacts” toggle off and back on one at a time to refresh.

Login to iCloud.com then press Contacts. If the missing contacts are there, they just aren’t syncing to your iPhone. Trying signing out of iCloud (iPhone Settings, > your name > Sign Out) and back in.

On iCloud.com, click your name at the top then press Data Recovery and select Restore Contacts. You can roll back your entire contacts database to a previous date.

Open the iPhone Contacts app and tap Lists or Groups in the top left. Make sure all groups are checked, some can be hidden because their group isn’t selected.

If none of the above worked, it may be worth contacting Apple Support directly. They can check your iCloud server logs to see if there was a sync error.

Same exact issue. This started about two months ago after an update. This is not user error. This is 100% an apple issue.”Every day I'm having to create a new contact for people I've known for years. I get calls daily from phone numbers I don't recognize, so I have to let it go to voicemail”

same exact situation. They also forced me to upgrade my storage and it was around this time that it happened as well. I have years and years of contacts that are not syncing.

I can tell I had iPhone 13 and bought iPhone 16 hoping it was an issue with that model.

Unfortunately, I stumbled into a problem that I spent money and issue persists with newer versions. Each and single time I have an update all new contacts disappear, read again: each and single time I have a new iOS update contacts dissapear!!!!! It’s just too bad to be true!!!

I have been losing more and more contacts. It seems like it happens when my phone updates but may be happening randomly. I went to the iCloud to try to restore my contact list, but when I tried it said no archives. Where are my contacts? How do I get them back. I have several important contacts that I have no way of communicating with and no other way of retrieving. This is unacceptable.

I have had the same problem. It is Apple negligence and I know that because when I went to the Apple store for help, they kept telling me it was because of my settings but couldn't find any of my settings that needed to be changed. I got a myriad of excuses, none of which included Apple. I have talked to so many people that have had this problem with their iPhone but can't get any help from Apple. The contacts that I have lost were not connected to a previous email address. I also tried to restore from my iCloud account but under my contacts it says no archives. I have had an iPhone since they came out but I'm seriously considering an android phone at this point.

My calendar on my iMac will not allow me to enter a new card/contact. I'm able to enter a little bit of information and then it disappears. My iOS is up-to-date (Tahoe 26.5.2), and I've restarted my computer, and it's still not working.

Any suggestions, since this appears to be a bit different than wht others are experiencing?

Thank you in advance.

Yeah that's not what's happening to me I can literally have someone who texts me and Oregon called me or both on my iPhone 13 and I can take that and take an unknown number and create a new contact it literally shows up you can see their name next to their text string and all the information is there 5 minutes later I can go back to try to open that up and add an email or some more information in a contact it completely reverted back to an unknown number for no reason that My phone went back into lock mode and I unlock it and it's gone That's it that's happened twice now within five minutes no sinking no updating we're not doing anything special contacts are just disappearing and the 2nd problem that's been happening for the last six months on and off is you no longer can block or add people to a spam list and it stick it still shows the functionality is there but it's not working they still haven't fixed it and it's all related to something inside the contact software...

Sorry I can’t help; I am unable to read stream-of-consciousness writing unless it is by James Joyce or Virginia Wolff.

Do you need me to be more clear, I mean do I need to write it no Like bullet points for you, I mean it doesn't look like they allow me to edit so I can't go back and edit and now you use talk to text and I'm in a hurry but I thought I was pretty clear..

  • Had multiple issues recently not during an update of the phone not during a SYNC to my cloud, I literally took a phone number that was unknown both from a phone call and a text and I added a new contact. It was there my phone locked 10 minutes later I opened it back up to add an email address to it and it disappeared it was back to being an unknown phone number both in my phone log and the text that was associated with the number even though it was saved and it was absolutely a contact.
  • This happened before a month or so ago So then I added it again and then all of a sudden one day I had two people with the same contacts like it reappeared out of nowhere.
  • That along with the fact that for the last six months I haven't been able to use the spam filters to add people to a block list even though the software is still there I can select it I can add them but as soon as you leave that screen and go back they are no longer blocked and most of the people on my blocked Contact list are no longer blocked their calling again.
  • I believe it's all associated with the Contacts app not deleting it nothing on the list where people suggest off a prompt screen of all the things you can possibly do to get it fixed did not work it will not work i've tried multiple times...

I had to turn to adding An AT&T app that is called active armor on my 13 and 11 model phones, in order to alleviate at least the second half of my problem and being able to block unwanted spam and fraud.

however,

seeing this I believe there's a glitch within their code associated with the contact app for multiple people with different Phone models, it doesn't matter,

we're all experiencing similar problems, None of the regular resolves are working.

Really? you're gonna have to explain to me how an app that comes on my Apple phone that most have on all their phones,

Its not associated with an email contact list, literally the phone contact list the ones I add in my phone that should be saved in the phone and through the contact list and into the cloud and then when they're there one minute and gone the next,

you're saying that has nothing to do with my Apple iOS at all the software, it's not working right you're telling me that these updates are for nothing or are they fixing glitches ,this has a glitch ,we're saying that the contacts in our phone have a glitch, at least mine does; both using the spam filters, you know the blocking features you can see them, you can try to use them, but they don't stick, therefore they don't save,

so there's something wrong in the software IE the caching...

Since we talked last, I literally left the house came home opened my phone up and in my phone is now on the call list from yesterday where I first got a call from this person that very contact now shows their actual name, However it does not show their name next to the text that they texted me just a little while ago,

So they are being recognized in the phone contact as a caller from yesterday and even though today early this morning it showed as next to their text as well and now it doesn't you're telling me that has nothing to do with Apple and the iOS?

Oh and now I just checked it and earlier when I made this post I typed in their name because I know I made a contact and I it was notin there and now it's in there ,and yet it's still not showing their name next to their text.

the same phone number, the same contact, I say it's a glitch in the iOS software it's not cached incorrectly the programs are not working perfectly but hey if you say so it must be something else don't blame Apple even though it's on their phone with their apps..

Thank you, thank you!! It's not just me! I have sent a text to someone in my contacts, and as soon as send it, the contact disappears from my phone!! And as was mentioned, you don't know that you are missing contacts until/unless you look for that specific contact. I've had individuals I text regularly disappear from my phone, as well as those that I do not. I don't have contacts on multiple accounts...all devices are signed into the same Apple account. This is happening on a regular basis, and based on comments/posts, it's not specific to a device. I hope Apple will address this soon! I've never had this issue before.

I wish it were that simple for me! This has happened more than once: I send a text to a contact and as soon as I send the text, the information for the contact disappears. In other words, instead of seeing a name at top of the "New iMessage" screen, it changes to the phone number. I truly believe this is an issue with my phone. I've turned my phone on and off. I turned contacts on and off. All contacts are associated with just one account: iCloud. I've never ever had these issues before. But my guess is Apple caused this with a software update.

Your guess is wrong. If that were true you would see 10,000 posts about it.

It would be a good idea to read over the 8 pages of posts in this thread for some insight on how to approach the problem.
