black circle with a red dotin the middle

I have this small circle with a red dot in the middle just above where i sign in that has recently appeared

im not sure what it is or how to get rid of it.

please advise

Any chance it looks like this:


That would be the selected icon for your user account. Not sure why it would have changed from whatever you had previously. It's one of many icons to be found in the Users & Groups settings.


You can select something else from many choices by click System Settings... > Users & Groups. Then click the icon for your user account. You'll find the icon above if you click the Suggestions group in sidebar.
