Frequent “scanning your device” interruptions

Hi!

I have an iPhone 16 Pro ~ I have several coloring apps I’ve had for quite awhile that I use daily. I never had any problems with them before but now when I’m using several of them, in the middle of coloring a picture, it will switch over to a “scanning your device” screen, often multiple times. Then when I go on Safari or DuckDuckGo, I see all these as open screens. What is this, why is it happening and how can I make it stop?! Do I need to install some kind of app to prevent or protect against this kind of thing? Any advice would be much appreciated ~ thanks!

That’s an ad or other pop-up from one of the apps, usually advertising for some other app or service.

It’s not actually scanning anything. Apps can’t scan your device.

The cause of the pop-up is probably the app you’re using.

Delete the app, and see if the pop-ups persist.

What to do? Find a paid app that doesn’t have these ads and annoyances. Or you can endure this as part of the cost of a cheap or free app. Or complain to the app vendor, but these pop-ups and in-game advertisements are usually where the app vendors get their revenue for cheap or free apps.

The app here can’t do anything other than advertise or annoy, though the app can try to convince you to load other apps — “coffee shop”VPNs in particular — that can be rather more intrusive, and can access and log your network activity. None of that is necessary.

No, you don't need add-on security apps. Add-ons can’t and won’t block this pop-up garbage either, and particularly not the “coffee shop” VPN apps, because these ads and these popups are a fundamental part of the app that you loaded.

They are ads from the apps you are using. Nothing is actually scanning your device, they are just trying to sell you something. You can stop them by:

  • Paying to remove ads in the app if possible. Personally I would not support a developer using these ads.
  • Quit using the app

You can also:

  • Contact the app developer
  • Write a review for the app on the App Store to let other potential users know of your experience. This also useful to let the developers know and they may be more responsive as a poor review may have an impact on their downloads.

If these are popups while in the coloring app, they are being delivered by the app developer. This is how app developers make money when they offer free apps. They are phishing scams most likely with the hopes you will open the page and pay for tools you don't need for issues you don't have. No one can scan your device remotely. NO ONE. I wouldn't use an app which delivers such nonsense to it's users.

Thanks so much! So many sketchy things online & it’s not cool at all for developers to scare people into buying apps they don’t need ~ will delete them, don’t like high pressure sales!

You're welcome. Sometimes the only way to show app developers who they've partnered with will lose them loyal customers. Don't forget to leave feedback for the app developer to know why they've lost you, by going to the App Store, find your app and then write a review. There's no way they won't see your review.
