The iPhone “listening” for Hey Siri is not the same as the microphone being actively used all the time.

When Siri is set to respond to the wake phrase, the iPhone employs a low-power, on-device processor that continuously listens only for the specific words “Hey Siri.” This is a passive, background process that doesn’t record or transmit audio.

By contrast, when the microphone is actively in use—for example, during a phone call, voice memo, video recording, or once Siri has been triggered—the system is capturing live audio input. That’s when the mic indicator dot appears.

So, Siri’s “always listening” is really a lightweight wake-word detection, not persistent microphone use.
