iphone displaying letters that I did not type

This is indicative of a screen digitizer failure, which is more common to happen in older iPhones. It can also be caused by a failing battery. i searched the community and found people with similar questions, but no answers.

Your phone has what is known as "ghost touch".

The screen is failing and will need to be replaced.....if you want to keep the phone. The battery may also need replacement.

Whether or not you can justify spending $400-500 on a older phone is your call. In some cases, parts may not still be available.
