Extremely loud frying sound on AirPods during phone calls heard only by the other person

Please read this before you direct me to a solution that isn't related to my (and other's) specific problem.

When I am using my AirPods on a PHONE CALL, the person I am talking to hears a frying or static sound that is extremely loud, so loud that they have to hang up. They or I call back, and it happens again. It is literally impossible to use my AirPods on a phone call - no matter who I am talking to or where they are on the earth.

I rarely hear the noise on my end and if I do, it is very faint.

This isn't local interference, it happens no matter where I am, outside, in my car, in my office, in my home, in Los Angeles, Long Beach, Palm Springs, Washington D.C, Chicago, everywhere. I don't wear earrings; I have deleted from my phone and reset my AirPods. No change.
