Voice Memos app records static and faint voice after latest update on iPad Pro

I get static sounds and my voice faintly in the background. mics seem to work with ChatGPT, camera video and other apps. At least one other person on reddit has had same experience. Can Apple confirm this is a bug and that it will be fixed, or is there a problem with my iPad Pro?

Re: "Voice Memo App Stopped Recording on latest update"

If you want to check that you do indeed have the very newest iPadOS installed

About iPadOS 18 Updates - Apple Support says iPadOS 18.6.2

and "This update provides important security fixes and is recommended for all users".

✽ As the microphones can only be in use with one app at a time, it may be wise to check Voice Control has that access, rather than other apps that may be in use.

✽ Also: Check there are no un-necessary third-party apps, like virus-checkers, ad-blockers, cleaners, and the like (even VPN) causing interference. ie: If installed try turning them off, or use uninstallers from the developers)

✽ Any third-party apps you find necessary need to be kept updated in order to remain compatible.

_______________

Trouble-shooting:

✽ You might want to check through Apple Support's online aricle (link below):

If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker - Apple Support

✽ Seems you have already followed some of Apple's suggestions : If the microphones on your iPad aren't working - Apple Support and, being a built-in app, Voice Control should always have direct access to the microphones.

Yet the article also says:

"If the sound is unclear during FaceTime calls, in video recordings, or in apps, learn what to do.

Clear the microphones

      1. Remove any screen protectors, films, or cases from your iPad.
      2. Clear any debris from the openings of your iPad."

Also: "make sure that the microphones on your iPad aren't blocked by your hands or a case. If your iPad has a screen protector, make sure that the screen protector has an opening over the front microphone."

and says:

✽ "If you still can't hear your voice clearly, contact Apple Support{

Re: "Can Apple confirm this is a bug and that it will be fixed ... "

As we are all Apple users, like yourself, in the community, no-one here can speak for Apple. Also, we don't get to see feedback sent to Apple, to know if others have a similar problem at the moment. Unless others reply to your post sharing their experience, we have no way of knowing for sure.

Apple is unlikely to =see your post or your request here. However you can send feedback yourself, to reach those who work on Voice Memos behind-the-scenes at Apple.

They will likely not reply, yet your feedback will be carefully read and logged, and if others do have a similar issue, we may see the issue addressed in an update. The more feedback Apple receives on which devices and OS versions (if any) are affected, the more likely we would see an update.

Restarting an iPad can often restore order if something is not working as expected (ie: Deletes temporary files, re-establishes connections, may update recent setting changes, and more)

iPad Support website: iPad - Official Apple Support (provides info. / support / contact options etc)

Else an iPad may need a "hands on" inspection to uncover any problematic issues:

I did take it to an Apple Store, we ran diagnostics and the microphone that the voice memo uses is defective. Their “solution“ is that I give it to them for one to two weeks and they’ll do a replacement. I asked them what universe they lived in they thought that I could do without my iPad for one or two weeks.

I called Apple support and got a CS exception that would’ve permitted them to order a replacement while I held onto my original iPad, but the store refused to honor the CS. The store was at 14th St. and ninth Avenue here in New York. The people were willing to do it, but their computer systems wouldn’t allow it.
