Incompatible USB-C fast charging cable for Apple Watch Series 5 and SE

I have bought the apple watch usb-c fast charging cable - but it does not charge my apple watch 5. On the apple store it says it is compatible. However, after searching online when it doesnt work I have now learnt that perhaps there is an older USB-c magnetic charger (not a fast charger) i need - that is not actually for sale in the apple store. why is this not clear on the apple store?

My wife has an SE Apple watch and that has the USB-C charger that works, and i had to buy separately when i bought her that watch (it has recently broken hence buying a new one). Why is this all not clear on the apple store and can i exchange the fast charging cable for a slow charging one (USB-C) that works with series 5 and an SE watch?

Short answer:

  • Series 5 and SE don’t support fast charging—only normal charging speeds.
  • Apple’s store lists compatibility in a way that’s technically true—but doesn’t necessarily explain charging speed limitations, which can lead to confusion.
  • You can exchange the fast-charging cable for the regular one if needed, under Apple’s return/exchange rules ... typically within 14 days of the purchase date.

A bit longer answer:

As I mentioned, Apple Watch Series 5 and Apple Watch SE (2nd gen) do not support fast charging. Fast charging only works with Series 7 or later and Ultra models.

The Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charger to USB-C Cable page lists compatibility with Series 5 and SE among many others. The issue is that even though the cable works physically, the Series 5 and SE don’t have the internal hardware to take advantage of faster charging speeds.

Not sure about your comment about your wife's iPhone SE cable as these models only come with the regular cable. Only Series 7+ have the fast charging cable.
