Cannot Add Google Account to macOS: Authentication Failed Error

Hello everyone,

My Google account was connected on all my devices including iPhone, iPad, MacBook, and Mac mini.

I had to change my password, and after that I was logged out from macOS settings.

I removed the account once and tried to add it again from Internet Accounts in System Settings, but every time I try, I get this error:

Authentication Failed – Failed to authenticate with Google, please try again later

What should I do?

Any help would be appreciated.

Here's what worked for me:

  • Open Keychain Access, find all Gmail/Google entries and remove them.
  • Reboot.
  • Make sure your firewall is not blocking OCSP queries (ocsp.digicert.com, ocsp.comodoca.com, etc.)
  • Go to your Google account in System Settings -> Internet Accounts
  • You should be greeted with a browser window to log back into your Google account.
  • If you see a popup on top that it can't verify your username/password, ignore that popup and continue signing in on the browser. Grant macOS all access and the browser should close automatically.
  • Click OK/Close in that popup if it exists

Did you try shutting downa nd restarting your computer to compare you results...(?)

did you try temporarily setting your Safari browsers as the default...(?)

and try again.
