Message notifications to Iphone & Apple Watch

Over the last couple of days I've suddenly been getting message alerts on both my phone & watch almost simultaneously (phone a fraction first) whereas it always used to just be on my watch only (which I've had for 4 years). I changed nothing in the settings prior to this happening & have since unpaired & paired the watch back but it's still doing it. I'm sat at my desk at work & both keep going off which is driving me mad!

Any help or suggestions please

That is what so many people ask for but the Watch always takes precedence normally.

First check iPhone, Watch app, My Watch tab, Notifications, Messages, is set to Mirror my iphone

After that...

No, phone is to the side of me on my desk & screen is locked (as I always keep it when working). The phone will now ping when I get an imessage or whatsapp message then seconds later I'll get the notification on my watch. For as long as I've had my watch it would always only be that that would notify me but it's only been the last couple of days that things have changed - I'm not aware of any overnight updates that may have affected this?
