iPhone & Apple Watch not charging with same charger

Yesterday, as usual, I used an original Apple USB-C power adapter to charge my Apple Watch. After about an hour, I noticed that it wasn’t charging, and since the watch was completely drained and turned off, it wouldn’t power back on.

I unplugged it and decided to try again at home with other chargers. In the meantime, since my iPhone 16 Pro Max battery was also running low, I connected it to the same Apple power adapter. Unfortunately, just like with the watch, after about 30 minutes I realized it wasn’t charging either.

After that, I tried several other chargers, but neither device would charge, and iPhone powered off completely.

Now both devices are at Apple Support for inspection, and I don’t know the outcome yet. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar, and if so, what was the result? Did Apple replace your device with a brand-new one or with a refurbished unit? Thank you for any useful info

Hmmm — when both an iPhone and Apple Watch suddenly stop charging from the same adapter, it strongly suggests either a charger fault that damaged the devices or, less commonly, a coincidence where both devices had their own charging issues around the same time. Since you mentioned you were using an original Apple USB-C power adapter, it’s unlikely to be a counterfeit issue, but even genuine adapters can fail. A faulty adapter could deliver unstable voltage or current, which can damage the charging circuits inside the devices. Once that happens, the iPhone and Apple Watch may no longer respond even when connected to other chargers.

AFAIK, as for what Apple typically does in cases like this: if both devices are under warranty or covered by AppleCare+, they’ll usually be replaced rather than repaired — iPhones are almost always swapped for a replacement unit. Most of the time these are “service replacement” units, which may be new or Apple-certified refurbished, but from the outside, they look and perform like brand-new devices with a fresh battery and shell.

For Apple Watch, the replacement process is similar. If Apple determines the adapter itself was defective, they may replace that as well. I’d be curious to hear what Apple tells you, because if it was truly a power adapter failure, they’ll likely want to investigate further to prevent a repeat issue.

Hello, thank you very much for your reply! Of course, I’ll keep you updated.

Just to clarify, in case replacement is necessary, would the devices be refurbished units with a new shell? I ask because I’m a bit hesitant about receiving a device that was previously used, especially since both of mine were purchased brand new and unboxed by me.
