You cannot use Google Pay (GPay) on older iPhones like the 6s or 8 in India because UPI payments require a higher level of device security. For UPI transactions, the app depends on features like Secure Enclave and Face ID/Touch ID with newer hardware security modules to protect authentication and sensitive data. These requirements are only fully met on iPhone X or later models.

So, while you may still be able to install or run Google Pay on older devices for non-UPI purposes, UPI payments won’t work. This is a deliberate restriction for security reasons set by both Google and the Indian banking regulations.

In short: for UPI in India via GPay, you’ll need iPhone X or higher.

The outfit that runs the UPI system – National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) – has decided that UPI payments on iPhones are only allowed on iOS 17 or higher. My understanding is that NPCI requested a feature to help with countering SMS-message-related fraud, and that this feature first went into iOS in iOS 17. NPCI seems to value the feature so much as to be willing to abandon any iPhone that does not support it.

The iPhone X cannot update past iOS 16, and so is not allowed to make or receive UPI payments.

The OP will need an iPhone that is compatible with iOS 18 or iOS 26. All of the iPhones which were compatible with iOS 17, when it was available, are compatible with iOS 18. Most of them are also compatible with iOS 26 – except for the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max, which will never be able to update past iOS 18.
