Pink screen flash when shutting down M1 MacBook using power button

I have an M1 MacBook, and I noticed the following behavior:

  • When I shut down my Mac using the Apple menu ( → Shut Down), everything is normal.
  • But when I use the power button to shut down (even without opening the lock screen), the screen flashes pink for a second before turning off.
  • I tried this in Safe Mode as well, and the pink flash still happens.
  • My Mac works perfectly during normal use—no color issues, flickering, or display problems.
  • I also reinstalled macOS, but the behavior persists.

Is this normal for M1 Macs, or could it indicate a hardware issue?

Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Pressing and holding the power button / TouchID sensor is the method for a hard shut down (the equivalent of cutting power to the device, like unplugging a TV). It's called 'hard' because it's not the careful and coordinated way your Mac should be shut down, and you should only use the hard shut down if the Mac is frozen/unresponsive.

Yes, seeing a flash or other graphical anomaly is 'normal' when doing a hard shut down, because you have no real control over what's being interrupted.

Hi,

I think you shouldn't hard shutdown since it makes something wrong for installed macOS. You should normal shutdown instead.
