Is it safe to charge MacBook Air via thunderbolt port using 60W power supply from my old MacBook Pro?

Is it safe to charge my new MBAir via the thunderbolt port (not the mag-safe) using a 60W power supply from my old MBPro?

Yes. It's perfectly fine. The Mac cannot be overcharged, and will only take as much power as it needs form the charge.


There is absolutely no issue or danger in using the previous Mac's charger.

Using a power adapter with a higher wattage than the one recommended for your Mac is not a problem.

Using one with a lower wattage than recommended might be, if it's too much lower then the adapter may not provide sufficient power to both run the Mac and charge the battery (meaning your battery will drain even though plugged in). In my experience, using a 61 W adapter for a Mac that ships with a 67 W or 70 W adapter is fine. Using a 30 W adapter for a Mac that ships with 96 W adapter is not.
