AirPods Pro 2 disappearing from Find My with lost mode activated

Hello,

I lost my AirPods Pro 2 during a trip and after a few days tracking it with the Find My App, I essentially accepted that they were gone for good. Regardless, I had lost mode activated just in case. Recently I went to check on another device and realized they weren’t there anymore. Is that even possible? I was under the impression that lost mode made the device essentially unusable.
