Apple did answer this particular “why” when it happened a half-decade or so ago: environment.

Some of the contemporary presentations mentioned that Apple found a whole lot of the chargers went straight from the box right into the trash, too. This given repeat iPhone buyers usually already have a charging setup and cables.

As was discussed back then, those new to Apple and iPhone and that need a charger can get the exact charger they want at time of purchase too, whether a low-wattage single-socket charger, or a MagSafe or Qi charger for wireless charging. Or if they’re planning to buy more than an iPhone, a higher wattage charger or multi-socket charger that works with iPad or Mac or other gear.

This trend has only accelerated with the more recent European common charger requirements applying across a whole lot of gear, too: “mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, videogame consoles, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems and earbuds sold in the EU. From 28 April 2026, they will also apply to laptops.” The rechargeable flashlight I recently bought uses USB-C, for instance.

Might there have been other (and unstated) reasons? Other reasons “why”? Sure.

Apple hasn't supplied a charger with iPhone purchases since iPhone 12, 5 years ago. Samsung and Google don't supply them either. And no, they don't cost $40 - $50. You can buy a good charger on Amazon for under $20 and even at Apple, you can buy a charger for $19 for a 20w charger.
