Phone spam is a worldwide problem with no general solution; anyone who finds a solution deserves a Nobel Prize.

It is pointless to block unknown numbers, because spammers and scammers never use the same number twice. If you block you will have thousands of blocked numbers that will never call you again.

One solution is 3rd party apps: NoMoRobo has a database of 12 million (and growing) numbers used for spam, and will block these if they call you. Some carriers also have number blocking apps, although they don’t work very well. My carrier will send the caller ID “suspected spam” on calls that present a caller ID that is not the actual origin of the call (the carrier knows the actual calling number, but Caller ID displays the number of a caller’s choice).

If there is a pattern to numbers that spam you (for example, all from an area code where you normally don’t get calls) the app Number Shield lets you block using a pattern, for example 646-###-#### will block all calls from the area code 646.
