iPhone 17 Pro Region Differences - Hong Kong vs Canada version?

Hi there,

I'm looking to get the 17 Pro when it releases and I'm in Canada. I've just realized that the 17 models will only have ESim available - but I would like to keep a physical SIM slot for travel/work.

I'm traveling to Hong Kong soon so am thinking about purchasing the new phone there instead, but am wondering if there are any other regional differences between the phone models? I've heard that the HK models don't have Esim available at all but it looks like they do now, and have also have heard different things about Facetime Audio, camera shutter sounds, etc. Also looks like the phones are in different zones? for frequency bands so wondering if this is a major concern.

Wondering if anybody has any clarification and is there anything I should be especially mindful of or should I generally be ok to purchase from Hong Kong?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

I disagree slightly with Kilted Tim, I think the major problem will be the supported frequency bands for the different regions. Canada and USA use the North American bands which have some subtle differences to Rest of World. There will be some crossover in the different models to allow roaming, but you may find some compatibility issues and less than optimum data speeds when used out of region. For roaming use this is not usually a big deal because you can use any available network, but at home you will be locked to the home network’s choice of channels.

Only from memory, I think the version without any eSIM is mainland China where most networks don’t support eSIM.

Advice: Buy in your home region, which appears to be Canada.

You can certainly disagree with KiltedTim but the different sized batteries between a Canada and Hong Kong variant phone is actually an extremely important difference.

It also used to be the case that there were various restrictions on phones intended for sale in China. I don't know if that's still true, but they couldn't be changed simply by restoring iOS in a different region.

I wouldn’t buy a phone intended for a totalitarian regime. (I have to make exception in UK as I live there 😂)
