Even though you know the password, if it's not working then you need to reset it.

Follow the steps here:

You may also be able to reset your password from your Apple Account.

the login username and password for a Mac was created initially when you set up your Mac or added your account.

It is NOT your Apple-ID password!

Your Mac can not be forced to 'spit out' the password, because that password is not stored 'in the clear' -- Not anywhere.

As you enter a Mac password, it is encrypted as you type, and only the fully-encrypted password is stored. Your Mac does not know the clear-text password, and does not even know how many characters are in your password. All that your Mac can tell is, if you enter the right characters in the right order and they are encrypted the same way as before, "was that it?"
