Ok, review the information provided here:

If you can’t turn on or sign in to iMessage or FaceTime on your iPhone - Apple Support

I would focus on activating on the iPhone first with some of the tips offered in the Support Article:

  • Make sure you have a cellular connection on the iPhone to receive a SMS message.
  • Make sure you are not using a VPN. Not just turned off, but removed if you have one.
  • Check that the Time Zone is set correctly in Settings as seen in the Support Article..

With the steps you have already taken and reviewing this information, if you are still having trouble, I would recommend to contact Apple directly for them to verify any account related issues that we are unaware of.

Thanks for your quick reply.

I get no messages, just the log in screen again.

On my iPhone (which got the update and has no problems) under settings-apps-messages-iMessage: "Activation unsuccessful. Turn on iMessage to try again."

I have toggled iMessage, still nothing.

Yes, I am using the same account.

Yes, I have no problem logging into the link above.

I even just reset my network settings on the iPhone.

Hope any of this can help.
