Slow performance and lag after iOS 26 update on iPhone

After updating my device to iOS 26, I have been experiencing significant lag across apps and system settings. The performance has dropped noticeably, making the device feel slow and unresponsive. This is affecting the overall user experience, and I would appreciate guidance on whether this is a known issue or if there are recommended steps to resolve it

Apple actually mentions this in their support guide as well. After a major update, performance can temporarily slow down while the system finishes background tasks like indexing data and optimizing apps.

You can check their official guidance here:

If your iPhone or iPad is running slow - Apple Support

A few practical tips that usually help:

Restart your iPhone once after the update. It clears temporary system processes.

Leave the phone charging on Wi-Fi overnight. iOS often finishes indexing and optimization while idle.

Check storage space. If your device is almost full, performance can drop a lot.

Update your apps. Some lag comes from apps that haven’t been optimized for the new iOS yet.

In most cases, performance goes back to normal after a day or two once the background processing is done. If it’s still lagging after that, resetting settings or reinstalling the system can help.

This is pretty normal after updating to iOS 26, especially in the first couple of days. Your iPhone is doing a lot in the background, like reindexing photos, optimizing apps, and rebuilding system data, which can make everything feel slow and laggy.

If your phone isn’t a newer model, you’ll notice it more since the new system is heavier. Some apps might also not be fully optimized yet...

Give it 1–3 days, keep it plugged in on WiFi overnight, and restart it once. That usually smooths things out.

If it’s still lagging badly after that, then it’s not just the update, and you might need to reset settings or reinstall the system.

Had the same issues as OP, waited 3-5 days for the indexing to finish and still have some lags, but what worked was, I went on Setting - Accessibility - Display & Text Size - Reduce Transparency,

Turning it off, quiting setting, and then turning it on again, seems to make the phone run better. Everything is snappy again. Maybe it’ll work for you too.

I’m on iphone 13 128gb with 24gb of storage left.

So I have an iPad 16, but have had some success which the lag nonsense. 26.2

i waited a few day, made zero difference, could not even do a google search , took forever, anything internet slow, lagged. Freezing, even opening settings would freeze, often needed to close and restart.

what worked… wipe clean, and restore a week ago backup, then reset network settings, clear cache for Safari.

started improving almost immediately, and after a day, pretty normal. This did recover a bit of storage space, but had > 50 free to start . Should not need to do all this iOS gymnastics, but it solved the issue. Best of luck to you! -s

There may be several reasons due to which an iPhone may behave as described by you. Some of them could be...

Let's delve a bit deeper into some of them:

  1. Storage: A full iPhone can definitely slow things down. Phones can experience performance issues when the storage is nearly full. Users can check their storage status by going to Settings > General > [Device] Storage. Deleting unnecessary apps, photos, or videos can free up space and improve performance. How to check the storage on your iPhone and iPad - Apple Support.
  2. Battery Health: A degraded battery can impact performance. A deteriorating battery can impact the overall performance of an iPhone. Checking the battery health can be done by going to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. If the maximum capacity is significantly reduced, it might be time to replace the battery. Prolong and Maximise Battery Performance … - Apple Community
  3. Incorrect Handling: Accidental drops or bumps can cause internal damage. looking at the Apple's guide on proper handling is a good step. Important handling information for iPhone - Apple Support (IN)
  4. Environmental Issues: Extreme temperatures, dust, and water exposure can all be detrimental.
    1. Keeping iPhone clean is an important step. Dust accumulation in the iPhone's ports and openings can affect functionality. Apple provides guidelines on how to clean iPhones safely, which usually involves using a soft, lint-free cloth to remove dust without causing damage. Cleaning your iPhone - Apple Support
    2. Keep the iPhone within temperature limits. Phones are designed to operate within a specific temperature range. Exposure to extreme temperatures, especially in parked cars, can lead to overheating or other performance issues. If your iPhone or iPad gets too hot or too cold - Apple Support.
    3. Addressing safety issues is also important: Important safety information for iPhone - Apple Support (IN)
  5. Unauthorized Service: Servicing an iPhone through unauthorized channels can result in substandard repairs and void warranties. Users should always seek authorized Apple service centers for repairs and maintenance.
    1. Repairs by unqualified technicians can introduce new problems. Find information about your warranty or AppleCare plan - Apple Support is helpful.
    2. Modification / Alteration of an iPhone by a third-party vendor may cause issues beyond repair. --> Unauthorized modification of iOS - Apple Support (IN)
  6. Jailbreak: Now, let's talk about jailbreaking. Jailbreaking removes Apple's restrictions, allowing for more customization and app installation outside the App Store. However, it can also lead to instability, security vulnerabilities, and issues receiving future iOS updates.

By considering all these possibilities, you've provided a comprehensive approach to troubleshooting the iPhone's behavior.

Understanding and addressing these factors can help you maintain the optimal performance and longevity of their iPhones. Following Apple's guidelines and seeking authorized support when needed are crucial for a positive user experience.

So despite owning the flagship 17 pro, I'm also experiencing these exact performance issues. I don't use the device for very demanding tasks so I'm appalled that the latest iOS performs worse than iPad OS 6. It likes to lag when I navigate my home screen, when I close apps, when I type practically anything on the new keyboard, and scrolling websites. I have maybe 20 or so apps installed on the device and less than half the storage is being used from music, so I'm running out of things to blame that aren't iOS 26. To remedy this I tried reducing the liquid glass effects, turning off background app refresh, and getting rid of apps that run in the background. At this point they just need to fully optimize the operating system and make it usable without lag, I think it's possible but i'm tired of waiting.

I also own an iPhone 17 Pro. I haven't turned off any of the Liquid Glass features. Background App Refresh is enabled for many of my apps. I have 537 apps installed and 5,999 photos. And, other than some music apps, there aren't really any apps that run in the background under iOS, so I don't know what you mean by that. My iPhone's performance is outstanding.

I suggest that you back up your phone, then restore it to factory settings, preferably by connecting it to a computer, as that installs a new copy of iOS 26.2. Test it without adding anything except what syncs from iCloud and see how it works. If you don't see any issues, the problem is most likely something gone amiss in your data. Unfortunately, figuring out what that is can be a tedious process.
