macOS Sequoia 15.7 — App Store won’t install Xcode 26 (error after download completes)

Hi everyone,


I’m on macOS Sequoia 15.7 and trying to install Xcode 26 from the App Store. The download completes, but then I get an error and the install fails (message: “Unable to install the software.”).


Things I’ve already tried (no luck):



  • Restarted the Mac multiple times.
  • Removed any existing Xcode:

sudo rm -rf /Applications/Xcode.app
  • Enabled the App Store debug menu and cleared caches:



defaults write com.apple.appstore ShowDebugMenu -bool true
  • (Then used the Debug menu to reset/clear caches and relaunched the App Store.)
  • Cleared App Store caches manually and signed out/in of the App Store.
  • Ensured plenty of free disk space and stable network.

System info:

  • macOS: Sequoia 15.7
  • App Store shows the latest Xcode (version listed as 26) on my end
  • Apple ID region: India
  • Free disk space: 50GB (plenty)

What I’m seeing:

  • The App Store completes the download, then fails at the install step with the error above.
  • Retrying produces the same behavior.

Questions:

  1. Is Xcode 26 officially supported on macOS Sequoia 15.7?
  2. Is there a known App Store issue or a workaround for this install step?
  3. Anything else I can reset (e.g., specific daemons, additional caches), or should I use the developer.apple.com direct download as a fallback?

Happy to provide logs if helpful (Console filters like appstoreagent, storeassetd, softwareupdated, or /var/log/install.log).

Because it doesn't work. Xcode is just too large and complicated for the Mac App Store download and installation process.


Even on the Developer site, Apple has started splitting Xcode up into Apple Silicon and Universal downloads to make it easier on developers. The direct download still takes several minutes to download and expand. But then you can easily swap out the old app for the new, and then delete the old app. And you can continue to use Xcode while all of this is going on, except for the actual swapping.

What I did to resolve was download Xcode 26 from Apple and install it.


When the update came out, I was in the exact same state, though, and had no clue why. Another Mac it worked fine. Odd part is the Mac that it doesn't install on is an unsupported mac for Tahoe. Could be related to why it doesn't install the development tools for Tahoe+1 on 15.7/Sequoia Mac that can't run Tahoe. Though I am just guessing.

This is a user-to-user support forum. Apple isn't here to answer questions. All I can do is recommend a logical review of the quality of Apple software released on the Mac App Store over the past decade. You'll have to draw your own conclusions from that exercise.


what's the upside of buying a high end laptop that can just be used for developing(not gaming) and still having problem with installing a tool that is so basic...

There's nothing basic about Xcode. It's a ravenous, storage-devouring beast like no other. There are many barriers to becoming a successful developer for Apple platforms. There are new barriers added every year. The upside is a chance at striking it rich, or at least being able to pay for groceries.

If you honestly think being a “successful developer” or overcoming barriers has anything to do with just downloading Xcode from the App Store… then we’re clearly living in two different worlds, my friend. And if you think brushing off bugs with that kind of talk or calling it “rich” is some sort of reality check, to me it just sounds like defending bad choices while fooling yourself.
