After upgrade to OS 26 Touch ID only works sporadically on 2019 MacBook Pro

Since upgrading to OS 26 Tahoe, my Touch ID only works sporadically to log in after sleep. There have been times, after walking away from my laptop for over an hour, when I tap the keyboard to wake it up that the screen initially shows the last thing I was working on as though no password is needed but then that quickly disappears and I have to enter my password because there is no Touch ID option. Other times, after the same time asleep, I have the Touch ID option available. I own a 2019 MacBook Pro (Intel processor) and it's possible that is part of my issue, but I'm hoping someone here might have a solution.

Any ideas anyone?

Turning off Touch ID then turning it back on worked for me. Didn’t have to redo Touch ID or make any changes.

System settings > Touch ID & Password > Use Touch ID to unlock your Mac - toggle off then toggle on

If that doesn’t work, toggle off, close system settings, wait a few seconds reopen and toggle on. You can also toggle off, restart your Mac then toggle it back on

My experience of this has been since 26.0.1 only (26.0 was fine) and it is specific to an external magic keyboard.

The computer is a 2020 M1 Macbook Pro (13-inch).

Login/unlock from screensaver or sleep has not been working using the external Magic Keyboard's TouchID sensor, but this works for everything else e.g. accessing Passwords.

What I discovered was that for the login I need to actually press down on the TouchID sensor on the external keyboard, whereas for everything else simply holding my finger on it is enough; prior to the upgrade, pushing down was never necessary.

However - and this seems very strange indeed - once I have pushed down on the button from a normal state to lock the system, I can then use just a touch to unlock it as it used to be. Something very odd is going on here, but at least I know how to operate it now and can just wait for a fix in a subsequent patch. Hopefully these ideas help someone else.

The go to way is remove all finger prints and set it back up— yes.

On an Intel machine you can try —

resetting the System Management Controller Reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support

Even though SMC controls the touchbar, the T2 Controller is responsible for TouchID as well, so some USB is in play, this would be NVRAM in part, notice:

USB Device: Apple T2 Bus

USB Device: Touch Bar Backlight

USB Device: Touch Bar Display

USB Device: Apple T2 Controller

therefore resetting NVRAM/PRAM Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

(get at least two-three rounds of the chimes when holding the NVRAM Reset)

Tahoe update caused problems for my Touch ID, too. The first steps did not work. I asked Mac Chat:

I had to delete and redo my fingerprint after reset;

Cleaning the button with a soft cloth and toggling on/off did not work for me. Redoing the fingerprint worked. There was no lag on Touch ID like before. AW-4:20 mountain time Sept 27.

Let us hope this helps some more people.

Since Apple keeps things close to the vest, we have no idea if they are working on a solution or simply don't care, but in the meantime I've found the issue for me seems to be one of timing and perhaps it may also be one for you folks:

What I mean is that for the times I can't use Touch ID, which is 90% of the time when waking up my computer, I've found that if I simply wait for 13 seconds after the password field becomes visible, I can use Touch ID to log in. It's not a tremendously inconvenient thing but it is oddly specific... I haven't timed how long it takes for the password field actually to display to start the countdown, but at least if I have a little patience I don't have to type in a password to unlock my computer.

This is definitely a first-world problem but considering Apple has always been the company whose products "just work" it is annoying.

As long as I'm speaking of things that are annoying, I wonder why there is absolutely no mention of this specific issue when googling the issue. Literally every time I've tried to research this problem, google and every other search engine I've tried jumps automatically to "clean your hands" or "carefully clean the sensor" or "delete all existing finger prints and do them again."

What's equally annoying is that this problem is SOLELY tied to waking the computer from sleep. Once it's awake, the Touch ID works flawlessly for every other use. When I use it to log into a website it never hesitates. Yes, the Touch ID is used in both cases, but that's where the similarity ends.

I would like to think Apple is aware of this and it will be fixed in an upcoming update but who knows. In the meantime, perhaps those of you who also are having this issue can see if your machine is working the same way as mine.

Good luck to all.

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019, Intel/TouchBar) same issue since 'upgrading' to Tahoe. If I wait 10-12 seconds on the singin screen then Touch ID becomes an option and works fine. However I should be able to lift the lid, place my finger, and be working in an instant.

Resetting SMC: no change

Disable Touch ID, reboot, enable: Worked once but now no change

I've reported it to Apple as a bug via their feedback so hopefully will be acknowledged and fix. I know in the grand scheme of things a 10-12 second delay isn't the end of the world but it's bloody annoying lol

Had enough today and rolled back to Sequoia. It’s like having a new computer!! No fans screaming, no random Tahoe freezes and launchpad’s back! Boy I missed that thing! And Touch ID’s working flawlessly now!!

Basically everything Apple broke, trying to gaslight us into calling an “upgrade”,

now working as it should! Using it for 5 hours already and not a single bug in sight!! Btw I'm using macbook pro 16 intel

Appreciate your testimonial .

Sequoia had similar issue when launched yes; Over the course of the year yes you would 15.7.1 is stable.

Any new macOS has to get the mass of humanity hitting on it from all angles to shake out the bugs. Nothing new here. we are on 26.0.1 Not everyone appreciates the challenges jumping on a new release.

I haven't had this much trouble with macOS since the dictation bug. In fact, I can say that this Touch ID bug is even more annoying and often prevents me from using my MacBook normally.

While still searching for a solution, I found the recommendation to try resetting the SMC. I tried it, and it seems to have helped, at least for now. I'm curious if anyone has tried it and if it made a difference.

Reset the SMC: The System Management Controller (SMC) handles low-level functions like power management. To reset it on most Macs, turn off the Mac, then press and hold the Option + Control + Shift keys and the power button for 10 seconds. Release the keys, then turn your Mac back on.

The solutuin is to turn off Touch ID then turning it back. Didn’t have to redo Touch ID or make any changes, go to:

System settings > Touch ID & Password > Use Touch ID to unlock your Mac - toggle off then toggle on

If that doesn’t work, toggle off, close system settings, wait a few seconds reopen and toggle on. You can also toggle off, restart your Mac then toggle it back on.

As the initial user to post this, I have read all responses and even sent a bug report to Apple but I may have found, at least in my case, the reason this is happening is that the Touch ID takes around 20-30 seconds to activate or wake up. Once that happens, it works perfectly. Not a solution but at least more information.

Now I'm off to Apple bugs to let them know what I've found.

Best to all.

Most times, the MacBook's firmware is also updated alongside the OS update. This could be the reason for both versions of the OS behaving in the same way despite you backdating the OS.
