MacBook air m1 2020, randomly shuts down and won't turn on until its plugged in

Hello,

I have a few MacBooks air m1 2020 that drop to 0% when they still have more than 30% battery and will not turn on until they are plugged in. Once they turn back on, they show 0%, but when unplugged, the percentage returns to what it was originally. The cycle count is around 60–70, the battery condition is listed as normal, and the maximum capacity is in the 90s. I have looked at other threads, but they are not helpful and only suggest sending the device to Apple. I need to know what causes this issue and how to stop or fix it.

As other end users who cannot touch nor remotely access your computers, sometimes the only option we have is "take to to Apple." However, I had some thoughts about an array of computer showing the same weird power behavior.

First, how many devices are showing this pattern? Cycle counts and Max Capacity do not, as you observed, raise any red flags for me. The charge/reading issues you report would lead me to say the battery was failing IF it only affected one computer. But it doesn't. So...

As more than one device is involved, are there any commonalities that might help us help you:

— are all devices on the same power system?

—If on the same system, has a professional checked that system for "dirty power," surprisingly common in older commercial buildings.

— has the system suffered any surges?

— if you carry a device to a totally different power system (like home to work, of vice versa) do the issues persist?

—Are all running the same version of macOS? Please tell us what versions are running.

For a single computer, an SMC reset is appropriate if the charging system shows oddball behavior. Not so much with a bunch of similar computers. However the SMC reset remains an easily-done option, but note that an Apple Silicon computer must be on wall power for the reset as shown in this Apple article:

I'll check back latter. I love a good mystery!
