To turn off the Passcode you must remove Touch ID; to use Touch ID you must have a passcode because Touch ID won’t be enabled after a restart, and in certain other situations, until the passcode is entered.

You don’t have to punch in the code every few seconds; first, the phone will stay open as long as you are using it, then it will go to sleep 30 seconds to 5 minutes to never (your choice) after you stop using it. When you wake it you use your fingerprint. If your fingerprint isn’t working go to Settings/Touch ID & Passcode and rescan your fingertips. The only time you need the passcode is if you shut the phone completely, then restart it.

If you don’t have a passcode the following features will stop working:

  • Password fill in for apps
  • Password fill in for web sites
  • Passkeys for sites and apps that support them
  • The Wallet app which you can use to hold credit cards, tickets, passes, etc.
