How can I fix Wi-Fi and CarPlay issues on iPhone 17 Pro Max?

Hi All, starting this thread as I purchased an iPhone 17 Pro Max today. Obviously it’s launch day so there’s not too much information on bugs as iOS 26 has recently come out in conjunction with the release of this phone. However, I’ve noticed some issues with my new phone and was wanting to see whether this is a ‘just me’ issue or it seems to be impacting other users.

Ive noticed that my wifi consistently was dropping in and out on setup and that my wireless apple carplay seems to disconnect intermittently.

I have tried a network settings reset with no resolution (twice) but would be really frustrated to have to reset my phone completely after transferring all my data across to my new phone.

I may end up returning this device and getting another one if any further issues persist whilst the return window is still an option.

People on the MacRumors forum are experiencing the same issues, and most of them are blaming the new WiFi chip. Apple really let us down this time. If they are working on a solution, why not come out and say it? There’s an article coming out in our local town newspaper warning people to hold off on upgrading to the new iPhone 17. Maybe this will catch momentum with it being discussed on X and other platforms. Perhaps Apple will take notice and create a sense of urgency.

Same thing here. I was using my 14 Pro last week on iOS 17 last week with no issues, but when I started using the 17 Pro, even with the same CarPlay in the same car, it will disconnect, and a minute or two later, it'll reconnect. It was on iOS 26 for the 17 Pro and I got it on iOS 26.0.1, and then this morning, same thing again, went off, then a min or two, its back on, when it originally first connected this morning, the reception was bars were grey but I was still able to use data, but not much calling. I assumed even being told and reading the update that it'll fix the problem, nothing changed. I have no problem with my AirPods 3rd Gen BlueTooth, but not CarPlay. The OS is still basically fresh out of the box, so no VPN, like if you just went to Apple, bought a new phone, and set up the phone there, chucked your sim onto the new one, some photos/videos and apps

Why would the VPN cause this if all I did was upgrade from 14PM to 17PM? I had my VPN on my 14 and zero issues?

Because the VPN is tied to the device it was originally installed on. And over time Apple is simply making it harder and harder to use a VPN on iPhone because they simply aren't needed and give people a FALSE sense of security, which is actually quite the opposite. You can if you insist on using a useless VPN, uninstall it, then install again to the new phone. But you simply don't need a VPN and it will continue to cause you issues.

Personally, you couldn't PAY me to use a VPN on my iPhone.

There’s no point in spending hours and days chasing a non-existent solution. It’s a hardware problem affecting a percentage of the first phones shipped. Return and replace your phone. The replacement phone will function perfectly.

I don't think that's the right solution. I have a launch day iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. Neither phone has any issues with CarPlay disconnecting.

I have contacted Apple Support multiple times to address this annoying WiFi CarPlay issue. Honestly, it is a shame on Apple that their support lack basic knowledge regarding their own products!

They are trying to avoid "admitting" it as an issue.

Anyways, I tried everything they asked for:

- have reset the network settings

- uninstalled and removed VPN protocols

- disabled Primary DNS

- renamed the iPhone

- reset all car connections

- disabled and enabled Content & Privacy Settings while enabling it for CarPlay

- ensured Siri is enabled

- and many other steps

Nothing worked!

Again, the CarPlay is just working fine on older iPhone models even with most recent iOS version.

We need an official response from Apple to address this issue, whether it be a software or a hardware issue and how to fix.

Many users returned their phones and got new phones that had the exact same behavior, so am not going to return mine for now until we have official reaponse from Apple!

iOS 26.1 on my iPhone 17 Pro is better than 26 or 26.0.1 were; only in that when wireless CarPlay does disconnect after a few minutes, it at least does not lock up the car head unit now. Previously the entire car system would lock up after the wireless CarPlay disconnection. Now the head unit continues to function but no CarPlay. Interestingly, if Maps is currently navigating, the audio prompts will continue to be heard through the Bluetooth connection on the car stereo but no CarPlay display. Only a 15 off of the car will get things back again. I've re-set the iPhone 17 Pro as USB only CarPlay and all is fine. This car worked flawlessly with my old iPhone 14 Pro Max wirelessly under all iOS's up through 26.0, when I regrettably traded it in for this iPhone 17 Pro.

Don’t get rid of or remove VPN

on your iPhone, as it provides crucial security and privacy benefits by encrypting your internet connection and hiding your IP address, especially on public Wi-Fi. While some situations may require temporarily disabling it, such as troubleshooting or accessing certain websites, keeping it enabled most of the time is recommended for protection against tracking and cyber threats.

you can turn it off when you’re at home and you’re using your secured network Wi-Fi.

VPN is not the cause of the disconnect. It’s something within the software of the IOS 26.1 and your Wi-Fi at home/work. Wi-Fi goes up and down and when it goes down, it may lose its connection with your router when Wi-Fi pops back up again it’s not talking to your iPhone (from the router to your iPhone). It all depends how strong your Internet service is which may have the effect on reconnecting to your iPhone when you walk in the door or when it drops. If you experience disconnects more often, you may want to check out your Internet service provider and router before making any decisions on the iPhone. You may want to get a stronger Mbps. 300 Mbps or higher. I’m sure Apple is working on a solution.

but keep complaining that’s the only way they know how to listen.

I complained about this issue since day one of getting my iPhone 17 pro. tried everything Apple recommended to fix including waiting for all the iOS updates I’m on 26.1 I even got Apple to exchange my phone for a new one still the same issue not sure what to do next. For context, I had a iPhone 15 pro and had zero issues. Apple support even took this and elevated it to a case and they say the engineers have it now whatever that. As of right now, the only solution is waiting for a new update.

Not even a single one!

Chris from JoyeAuto support told me this morning that they had just released this update a few weeks ago to address this issue specifically.

I am not sure if Apple had warned integrators sufficiently ahead of time, given the widespread issue. But it is fixable in software. Looks like it may need to originate from the carplay receiver device manufacturers, which explains why iOS updates do not resolve the problem.

I had a 16Pro and got the 17Pro. The 17 Pro. disconnected about every 15 minutes in my 2022 Genesis G80. I returned the 17Pro to Apple, kept the 16Pro, ( which works fine with my wired car play, which is the way I access carplay). I then bought an Iphone Air and I am currently using it wired for carplay. It has never disconnected. I also had replaced my cables with 10Gig cables. It appears that the problem is generic to the 17Pro and Pro Max. The Iphone Air also works perfectly in my 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe.

same here. I would rather say Apple may listen but incapable to resolve it yet.
I wonder if this is an HW issue and they haven’t found a good way to workaround it by iOS update.

then next question is, will Apple recall our problematic iphones if it was not fixable?

Since this is a user to user only forum, no one can answer your questions. If this was a hardware issue, it would affect everyone with an iPhone 17 Pro. But it doesn't. In our household, we have iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. Both work perfectly (wirelessly or wired) in both of our cars. Our best friends have the same combination of iPhone 17 (Pro and Max) and of their phones work perfectly in CarPlay the same way as ours.

The problem is there are SO many different infotainment systems out there. So finding why CarPlay works just fine in some cars and not so find in some cars isn't an easy task. It's not like Apple has access to the code in car manufacturers infotainment systems. They don't. They have to work with car manufacturers individually to determine where the issue is. And then there are yearly differences between the car models each year. That's complex and not which will be a quick thing to do.

Point taken. I'd edit out the last 2 sentences of my previous post if I could, however I can't figure out how to do that.

I've heard about people taking in their car or Carplay interface equipment for firmware upgrades and having success, but regarding Nissan they told me:
1. They don't consider this to be their problem. I can indeed take my car in and have whatever existing firmware updates applied BUT it will cost me a minimum of $190 for the privilege of implementing their bug fixes! There's no actual recall regarding carplay, so that service call cost is all on me.
2. Their official word is that the 2018 Nissan Leaf is only compatible with up to the iPhone 16e - not the iPhone 17. So I'm not going to give them a minimum of $190 given that they're effectively confirming it won't fix the iPhone 17 issue.

Previous USB-C iPhones worked just fine in my Nissan Leaf. I presume you can install iOS26 onto an iPhone 16 and it would still work for carplay in my car - that would seem to imply Apple implemented a hardware change to the iPhone 17 that broke my carplay. I wonder if anybody has been able to put iOS18 onto an iPhone 17 - that would be an interesting experiment for these carplay issues.

I'm surprised Nissan wants to take your money to update their system. That would leave a bad taste in my mouth, that's for sure.

In this thread there posts from people who have purchased inexpensive adapters, which seem to work well with CarPlay for them. You might want to look into that as a possible solution for you.

It's a bummer that car manufacturers just shrug their shoulders once an infotainment system in an older year car is "Obsolete" to them. The car manufacturer is the only company that can provide a firmware update and if they've decided to move on and focus on their new generation of cars/infotainment systems... it is what it is. It's not a quality control issue with Apple. Apple has provided all the updates that they will to address this issue as well as provided car stereo companies the ability to update their firmware. If your car manufacture doesn't, or won't, provide a firmware update, it might be time to look into an aftermarket stereo.

As others have stated, aftermarket stereos AND companies selling retro-fit devices to convert non-CarPlay stock stereos to wireless CarPlay, these companies appear to be who are continuing the work to provide firmware updates. At this point, I wouldn't hold your breath that Apple will release some type of magical update to fix this issue. This now solely lies with car stereo manufacturers to provide firmware updates to their systems.

I tend to agree with your statement, however when I updated to the latest developer build of iOS26 I did see it connect and stay connected for about 30 minutes - until I received my first phone call or text and then it crashed shortly afterwards. After that I unplugged it and plugged it back in and it continued working for a while (15 minutes?) before disconnecting again. Now it won't even connect at all any more. My first impression was that apparently Apple are working on it, even though it eventually fell into the same state of disrepair. What I do know with absolute certainty is that the moment I buy a 3rd party carplay adapter Apple will release the next iOS that fixes the problem ;-)

I just noticed another data point, I'm away from my car at the moment and I kicked off a navigation via the Maps app. Thankfully the directions were now coming from the phone's speakers (vs being totally silent). That would imply a BlueTooth connection to the car was responsible for the speakers not working when I pulled over and restarted the phone. Maybe I need to "Forget Device" on the car's BlueTooth settings and then re-pair it.
