iPhone 17 Pro Max - Randomly Rebooting

Received an iPhone 17 Pro Max yesterday in the mail - noticed it was rebooting in my pocket. Took it to the Apple Store and replaced it with the exact same model. New phone is also experiencing the same issue when locked (does not happen when speaking on the phone, playing music, etc). Panic log mentions AppleCentauriAlpha. Issue stops as soon as I turn off Wi-Fi and use cellular data. Set up both devices as new - did not back-up anything.

This looks like a software/firmware bug with iOS 26.0 affecting the iPhone 17 Pro Max. A number of users are seeing random reboots when the device is locked, and the panic logs often reference AppleCentauriAlpha. The fact that:

  • It happens on two different brand-new units,

  • It only occurs when Wi-Fi is enabled (not on cellular), and

  • It happens even when the phone is set up as new,

… strongly suggests this is not a hardware defect but a system bug in the current release.

What you can try for now:

  • Keep Wi-Fi disabled until Apple issues a fix (you’ve already confirmed this prevents reboots).

  • If you need Wi-Fi, try disabling features like Wi-Fi Calling or switching to a different Wi-Fi network to see if stability improves.

  • Check for any iOS 26.x updates soon, as Apple typically pushes a patch once these crash logs surface.

  • Report the issue (with panic logs) at feedback.apple.com so engineers can investigate.

We have iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max and are having zero issues. Do you by chance have a VPN installed on your phone?

I had this happen to me after a week of no issues.

To get past the restart loop I plugged my iPhone 17 Pro Max into a 65W power supply (on a hint I found on the internet). I was able to get past the reboot cycle using a 25W brick but it was laggy and would crash if I tried to do too much too quickly, so I thought more power might do the trick and it did.

While plugged in I went through the logs and found 2 issues that stood out to me.

  1. There was an error in the Restart Event logs which stated "rst uv_cp_uvlo" which basically means the A19 wasn't getting enough power under load
  2. In the JetSam even logs I found a bug code which suggested it was flooding the backboardd.

I turned on the reduced motion setting (Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Reduce Motion) and set my screen to 60fps and the phone hasn't crashed since.

Looking forward to this being patched... 60fps on pro motion screen is sad times.

its worth noting, that I woke up this morning and the phone was completely dead. I have got a refund as there is no stock for direct replacement and I now have to wait until end of october. The phone didn't boot up or respond to their diagnostic tool so I can't say for sure what caused all of this. Back to the old model until stock arrives *Sad iphone 12 noises*

Ive had the 17 Pro Max since the 20th. It’s been doing the random reboot, with WiFi on or off. With all the discussion I’ve seen it seems to be more of a software issue. I’ve just updated my phone to 26.0.1 then 25 min later the phone just randomly restarted it self. I was hoping the update would fix this bug, but I guess it didn’t. Now I miss my 14 Pro Max.

iphone 13, the same issue with iOS 26.1. My phone reboots randomly, even with good charge (>60%), showing less the 10% after. Sometimes it reboots 3-4 repeatedly.

Seems that the issue shows itself when I’m connected to internet (either via WiFi or 3G-4G), having 100% chance to reboot within an hour.

the only way to prevent it - to charge it constantly.

In ios 26.01 it was a little less, but I noticed very fast battery drain. I had to keep batteries with me first time in 5 years.

All foreground processes are switched off, smoothness is switched off too.

I was really happy with the previous iOS, I hoped new iOS 26.1 would fix the problem, but it didn’t.
