Ordering iPhone in a foreign region

Hi, I'm planning to travel to Hongkong recently where I don't have a local address, but the physical sim+esim combo for the new iPhone suits my need. Since there isn't an ideal configuration ready for pick-up at the local Apple stores at the moment, I would like to order one in advance and have it shipped to me while I'm there. Unfortunately it wouldn't let me select an Apple store for pick-up, so I'm just wondering what should I do in this instance? Fill in the address of a postal office? Or perhaps the address of a hotel (would a local hotel accommodate receiving the package for me)? Any help from someone who's done something similar before would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I’ve run into a similar situation before when traveling. Most hotels in Hong Kong are used to handling deliveries for guests, so putting down your hotel’s address usually works fine — just make sure to notify the reception in advance so they expect a package under your name. Postal offices aren’t really the best option unless you specifically set up a “hold for pickup” service. If Apple won’t allow store pickup, I’d say hotel delivery is your safest bet . By the way, I had the same issue once while booking something online for my classes, and hotel delivery worked perfectly.

Apple won't ship to a PO Box. They will ship to a local address only (I'm not even sure they deliver to a hotel). And what you're proposing is fraught with major issues. If you manage to buy your iPhone in Hong Kong and you don't live in Hong Kong, your phone will have no warranty in the country you do live. Unless you travel to Hong Kong routinely, should you have an issue with your phone (you know like drop it or break it somehow) are you prepared to get on a plane and take it back to Hong Kong for service? You may not even be able to get the battery replaced outside of Hong Kong, because Apple won't have a battery which fits your phone in a different country.

It's your money and you can do what you want with it. But it's NEVER a good idea to buy an iPhone, which has NEVER had an International Warranty and is sold regionally in a different country from the country you live.

There's nothing anyone here can do to help you. The phones are still too new, for stores to have them in stock for most people to be able to just walk in and buy one off the shelf. Apple is still working as fast as they can to fill preorders, some of which went out well into mid-to-late October.

If you are determined to do this, knowing your risks, do you have a friend who lives in Hong Kong? You could use your friends address.

Thank you for the response. I do live in a nearby region and travel back and forth regularly, so the warranty issue may not be that big of a problem for me. It really sucks that due to different regional regulations, we're limited to one of the 3 configs (esim only, physical only, one of each) even when everyone's personal need may vary. Was hoping Apple would at least allow pick-up at their own official stores but that doesn't seem to be an option right now. Not sure what else I could do to make sure it would be readily available when I visit, seeing that I can take the risk of it not being in my native region for repairs and stuff.
