There is also SoftMaker's Office 2024/NX office suite for macOS that is supported from macOS Catalina onwards. Free trial, then choice of subscription or single purchase. Less expensive than MS Office, and probably more compatible than the free LibreOffice.

I just re-upped from Office 2021 Home and Business for Mac to Office 2024 Home and Student for Mac. Cost 159USD from StackSocial. Probably should have done Softmaker solution though…

SoftMaker's site is weird. They make it awfully difficult to find their products. The main page only shows the subscription NX version, and there is no link to the perpetual license 2024 version. You have to hunt for it.

I just got an email from them asking if I want to join a beta group to test new features. I'm guessing this means a 2026 or 2027 release is in the works.

To avoid paying for the 2024 version and then maybe paying for an upgrade less than a year out, a person could use the free version in the meantime.

Does basically everything the paid versions do, but with no spell check and ads shown on the right side of the apps.

Edit: A person can also save $40 on the perpetual version at B&H Photo Video and a few other places. But the best offer may be in the free version. That's the one I started with and a side add offered an upgrade to the full version for only $29.

Yes, SoftMaker's site has become a jungle…

It's like they want users to find only the most expensive version. You have to click through under the only presented version.

That gets you here:

https://www.softmaker.com/en/shop/softmaker-office

Where you have to click through again on the Learn more button to see the subscription pricing, if that's your preference.

Finally, you see the pro version is $49.90 per year, and the home version is $29.90 per year.

So far, in the time I've been using their suite, it appears a new version comes out every three years. That makes the home subscription a bit cheaper than the perpetual license. Though not by much. As they seem to be working to make it harder to find the perpetual version, it may simply no longer exist in the near future. That's what MS keeps saying about Office, but they haven't done it yet.
