A search on this issue shows numerous times people have inquired but threads are closed without any answers. In my case, while I was previously able to manage the sensitivity by typing with great care, the sensitivity issue was increasing in recent days prior to upgrade on both my Mac and iPad. Now, since the Tahoe upgrade it is much worse. The cursor bounces to other places on my screen, and typing goes randomly to the middle of other sentences. As a trained typist who knows how to hold my hands, the issue IS the keyboard.
I am also a touch typist (learned on an IBM Selectric Typewriter in a typing class...actually was #1 or #2 on speed accuracy tests), but I still find myself accidentally brushing the Trackpad no matter how careful I am about it. The laptops I am using are seldom at an ideal height, plus the Apple trackpads are way oversized which makes typing more difficult due to needing to reach over the trackpad just to reach the keys (it is worse on the larger laptops which have even larger trackpads) even if the laptop was positioned at an ideal height.
You can try checking the Trackpad System Settings as well as the Accessibility System Settings (both Keyboard & Trackpad) to see if there are any adjustments there that may help. IIRC, the only way to fully disable the Trackpad while typing is to have an external mouse connected....or perhaps the use of a third party app which allows more configuration options for the Trackpad.
Note too, sometimes the cursor moves without my touching the keyboard or touchpad at all! I would appreciate advice if someone knows what may be the cause since the update or where the sensitivity can be adjusted.
This sounds more like a hardware issue with the Trackpad itself, or possibly an externally connected input device (external mouse/trackpad, keyboard, or tablet like a Wacom tablet, etc.).
The built-in Trackpad may have a hardware failure, or possibly the battery in your laptop is swelling & pressing against the Trackpad which is causing the trackpad to glitch. Usually when the battery swells you will find the Trackpad starting to rise higher than the surrounding palmrest, or the lid won't close completely/properly, or you may notice the laptop is off balance when sitting on a flat table/counter. I've been told by co-worker that sometimes the Lid Angle Sensor may fail causing odd behavior with keyboard & possibly trackpad. Some 2018+ Apple laptops will utilize a new style Lid Angle Sensor while others use older technology to determine if the lid is open or closed.
I guess another remote possibility is that you have an issue with some third party installed software. Try booting into Safe Mode to see whether that makes any difference when typing. I doubt this will be the case, but it is a possibility since the issue started after your upgrade to Tahoe.
