Here is how you go from an iPhone 8 to iOS 26.

Step 1. Purchase a new or Certified Refurbished iPhone that is compatible with iOS 26. You may be able to trade in your iPhone 8 for "up to $35" in credit towards the price towards the price of the other iPhone. (You probably would not want to actually send the iPhone 8 in until after using it to set up the newer iPhone.)

Apple Trade In - Apple

Step 2. Transfer your data from the iPhone 8 to the iPhone you just purchased. Transfers don't copy everything; e.g., if you used a computer to copy music from your own CDs onto your iPhone 8, and want that music on a new iPhone, you will need to do another computer-to-iPhone transfer with the new iPhone.

Step 3. Wipe the old iPhone 8 before selling it, giving it away, sending it in for trade-in, or recycling it.

There you have it. Three steps to go from an iPhone 8 – a phone forever limited to iOS 16 – to iOS 26.

You may want iOS 26 on your iPhone 8, but you can't have it. The iPhone 8, which ran iOS 11 when Apple came out with the first variants in September 2017 (more than eight years ago), cannot update past iOS 16. It did not receive iOS 17 or 18, which should have told you that it is not eligible for iOS 26.

If you want iOS 26, you will need to purchase a new iPhone that is compatible with it.

I would suggest one of the newer models on the list, as some older phones (like the 11-series ones) have received so many major iOS updates that it seems unlikely that they will receive iOS 27. (Also, older models would only be available used, and there can be risks to buying a used iPhone such as getting one that is Activation Locked, that is carrier-locked, or that will soon need a new battery.)

If you want Apple Intelligence, that has higher requirements. Many older phones that are compatible with iOS 26 do not have the required 8+ GB of RAM to run Apple Intelligence. For more detailed requirements, see

We need to stop responding to these obvious bots after a question like this from an OP. Have we not noticed that these random me-too posts appear after every topic like this one? Every one of these me-too posts is from a first time responder and never heard from again. Isn’t it obvious what’s going on here.

Now watch as this thread goes on for pages from me-too bots. We’re already up to three pages of nonsense. I mean how many iPhone 8’s are out in the wild these days?
