The call list should specify under number which number it was by the label you gave it when you added it to the contact.

i.e if it came from the work number it will show Work.

If multiple numbers have the same label, then you should give them unique label, like work1, work2 etc.. This only works for contacts store on iCloud that can have custom labels for the numbers though.

Edit the contact, tap on the number label, and scroll down to Create Custom Label to give the number a specific label.

I don't have the ability to show what I was referring to, but if you click on the (i) on a Recents call, it displays the callers contact card. If they have multiple numbers, the one that made the call would have a small box above the number that said Recent. But, I'm still debating how all of the labels for listings changed to "phone". I am hoping the OP answers my question about how they were managing their contacts, and if that could have been where that came from, such as an email account, Yahoo, Google, anything else. I know that Apple never made any change that would have changed this to "phone". I've been using iCloud for quite a while now.

I do think I remember that. But, I have so few contacts with more than one number. COVID really changed how people I work with used phones. We weren't at our desks so why give out that number?

Given this statement that Apple changed the data, how are you managing your contacts? Do you use iCloud, Exchange, or another email client?

I've had an iPhone from the beginning as well, and I've never witnessed the behavior you describe. While I did not realize a change in iOS 26 regarding Recent for the calls, if you are looking at your Recents list on the iPhone for returning a call, if you tap on the recent call in the list, it will use the number the individual/company used when they called you. That has not changed in iOS 26. The listings I see listed under the number as Phil 0124 illustrated earlier in the thread is what I see in my list, so I can tap that call and it will call the number they called from. I was not aware that the Resents badge is missing from the caller's contact card.

This is not a suitable response. We need to know if a setting can be changed to allow the actual phone number to be viewed and not just its label.

I think you may not understand this forum. It's a user-to-user forum. No one here works for Apple. No one here knows why Apple made the decisions they did or if they will ever change them.

At one time I had the names

unique, but Apple changed them all to phone one day and I have suffered since

then. I have been changing them since that happened one at a time, but I have

thousands of contacts and numbers and I don’t want to call four numbers to find

out which I got the call from. Before the I changed the operating system, the

history would say “recent”. Now there is nothing. I am asking if there is a way

to tell. I didn’t ask you for a better way to manage the way I list my numbers.

I am in the process of doing that just so I know which number I can send

a text to, but one at a time with thousands yet to be done is quite

frustrating. Can you help me?

I have had and Iphone for 20 years. There was a time when

the multiple  phone numbers in my

contacts had different labels. Home, Work, Fax, etc. About 3 years or so ago,

all of a sudden, all that data was changed by Apple. All the labels were change

to "Phone". This was a terrible inconvenience, but since then, as a

number comes up with all the labels marked as "phone" I change them

to something usefull like "moble" or something. Before I changed my

IOS to 26 my phone helped me with this because it would label one of those

multiple phone numbers as "recent". I would then label that number as

"moble" or something. Since last week's IOS change to 26.0, I no

longer get the phone number last called marked as "recent" so I have

no idea which of as-many-as-four-numbers-per-contact was the last to call me.

IOS 26.0 is new to me and different. I was asking if there the phone tells you

somehow. I already know I need to label them differently, but right now I have

to call them all to identify them. I have upwards of 4000 contacts. Not knowing

which number to call back is frustrating. Does that help you understand my

problem?

It still shows the recent calls in the contact card (if I'm understanding what you mean). Here's the contact card for someone I spoke to this morning:

I don't have enough contacts with multiple numbers to check to see what recents look like for them.

Seems odd that they stopped having a label when they did before, unless something else happened.

Apple cannot and does not modify things unilaterally like that. Something else had to happen. Trust me, it wasn't just Apple deciding to remove labels. It does not work that way. That would be an egregious breach of privacy.

Regardless, you will need to re-label them.
