computer locked. May be a scam

Something popped up on my husband's Apple Air,

saying my computer was locked down by Apple Rechnical Support saying to call 1-8********4. I suspect it's a scam, but I'm locked. what should he do?

It's a scam. Your computer is not "locked".

If you can't close the window, hold the power button until the machine shuts off, then re-start it.

Because your Mac might be set to reopens previously-used windows, in an attempt to be helpful, you may want to know this trick:

Control which windows Safari reopens on Mac - Apple Support

"To prevent windows from reopening the next time you open Safari, press and hold the Shift key while opening Safari."

That will keep the site that presented the scam message from automatically reopening, and getting a chance to try to lock your browser again. Then you can clear history, and make a note to yourself never to go back to a site that would abuse you in such a fashion.
