How do I stop my Apple Watch 10 from constantly switching to compass mode?

My Iwatch 10 is constantly switching to compass mode. It just started doing this today after weeks of working fine. I found older/2022 messages about it, but I tried all solutions there and that thread is closed. Tried setting watch to return to clock always, removed the "altitude" complication from the watch face, tried switching to another watch face, etc. Nothing works.
