How can I fix slow Trash emptying on MacBook Air?

I stopped a search of my old Time Machine backup because it wasn't going to help me get what I wanted easily (iTunes music) onto my new Macbook Air. Unexpectedly, thousands of files were transferred to the Trash which is taking hours to empty. What should I do?

Empty Trash with deleted Time Machine Back-Up Files I have purchased a new auxiliary hard drive to use in backing up my MBAir using TimeMachine. I have an older aux HD that I was using for TimeMachine. I decided to delete the back-up files and make room for general file storage. All went well until I tried to empty the Trash bin. I left the older aux HD connected while I “empty the trash” but it has been deleting files for literally three days. I am now up to over 500K items that have been deleted and seemingly no end in sight. Is this normal? Is it taking such a long time due to it being connected using a standard USB connection and not a newer USB-C connection?

mac won't delete time machine backups from trash I'm on a new Mac Studio running Sonoma. My back up drive said it was full so I went into time machine and dragged 6 folders from over a year ago into the trash. I hit empty trash and it was deleting files which took forever but it kept saying some files couldn't be deleted. I tried following a video on how to delete from terminal and that didn't do anything either. I did notice that when i ejected the external hard drive that i use for time machine the trash was empty but as soon as i turned the drive back on the files return to the trash. Any idea what I can do?

Deleting files won't go to trash When I want to delete anything, instead of going to trash, it gets fully deleted immediately. I just transferred all my data over from a 2015 Mac Book Pro to new Mac Book Air - things worked find on the Pro (runnin on Monterrey) - but now, not. Any suggestions about how to get files to go into trash rather than get deleted immediately? Thanks.

It takes a long time to delete thousands of files, especially if your storage is close to full. If you open Trash it may tell you how long it will take.

In the meantime, connect the Macbook Air to wall power, close all open apps but leave the lid open. An open lid will help the computer stay cooler and avoid the processor clocking back due to heat.
