New Transfer Protocol with iPhone 17 Series
With the release of the iPhone 17 Series, Apple changed the protocol for transferring cellular service to a new iPhone. Apple notified new iPhone 17 Series customers about the new steps, by sending them an email message with the heading, “Get your new iPhone ready with Personal Setup.” Unfortunately, this makes it appear that the message is only for customers who need “hand-holding” from a specialist, during the set-up process. Since I was comfortable setting up my iPhone myself, I did not open that email message, and used the old steps to transfer data from my old iPhone to my new iPhone. This resulted in me deleting the data and eSIM on the old iPhone, then not being able to set up cellular service on the new iPhone; so I had to call my carrier to do it. If I had opened the initial email message from Apple, I would have seen links for “Set up your new iPhone with help from a Specialist,” or “Want to set up on your own?” At that point, I could have selected “Want to set up on your own?” and would have had a seamless experience. The problems could have been avoided, if Apple had titled the email message, “Set Up Your New iPhone,” instead of “Get your new iPhone ready with Personal Setup.” I suggested this on the Apple Feedback site. Hopefully they will change that next year.
