Excessive iPad data consumption

Hello,

I had a day a couple of weeks ago where, for some reason I don’t understand, my iPad sucked up almost 2 GB in an hour. This is not the first time this has happened.

How can I track down just what happened, which application or process is responsible for this? The app listings under “cellular data“ seem to only show cumulative data use, not breaking it down by day. (I have disabled “use cellular data” for Safari, and I have disabled “wi-fi assist”.)

Can anyone advise me?

TIA,

Jeff

Admittedly my iPad is cellular only, but I suspect a cellular model shares this attribute with iPhone.

At Settings > Cellular, scroll down and tap “Reset Statistics”. Then you can see, for example, today’s numbers.

You have two conflicting thoughts.

  1. From your original post: “How can I track down … which application or process is responsible for this?”
  2. From your second post: “Thanks, that’s a good idea, but it seems to require my knowing in advance when one of these events is going to occur.”

Since you’re talking about looking at a 2GB per hour anomaly, all you have to do is reset the statistics occasionally while things are going well. Then when an anomaly does occur, most of the statistics will center around the anomalous behavior.

Thanks, that’s a good idea, but it seems to require my knowing in advance when one of these events is going to occur. As I noted, it’s relatively rare but has happened before (The last time was several months ago). I use “My Data Mgr” to track my cell usage, but it just shows cumulatives, doesn’t break it down by app or process. I actually suspect that it’s not an app, per se, but some underlying process that is the source. Something that might apply is that when this has happened in the past, I have been on a weak Wi-Fi network that seemed to drop a lot. It kinda looked as if my iPad was switching back-and-forth between cellular and Wi-Fi, switching to cellular when the Wi-Fi signal dropped, switching back to Wi-Fi when it revived. (I was in that sort of environment during the most recent incident.) I can imagine that this switching back-and-forth might require an amount of data that would be trivial if it only happened once (network handshakes or whatever), if there was only one switchover, but that doing it repeatedly would use up a lot of data. I dunno. 🤔😉😊
