Upgraded to Tahoe and getting extra mouse clicks

Have you uninstalled the third-party mouse software to check if the HID-standards compliant mouse functions as expected. A standards compliant mouse without any additional software should be able to click, secondary click, and scroll. Any other buttons/functions would not be supported. If it works correctly without the software installed, the problem is with the third-party system modification that provides the extra features the mouse may have.

My HID-compliant "non-Apple" mouse does not show any of the issues you describe.

Give this a try since system upgrades could mess up some system temporary cache and swap files: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following; 

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts 

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

My MacBook was out for a week last month - had to have it's whole logic board replaced (MacOS update couldn't find the boot sector) - so I don't think it's anything to do with that, since it's basically a new machine, upgraded straight away to Tahoe. Problem occurred before and after too. I'll maybe try that safe mode anyway later, if I have a non-busy moment.

If safe mode doesn't correct it, well, I guess it's still Tahoe. I only have two login items, a few extensions, and have I installed no fonts.

Both keyboard and mouse are wired-only (USB-3 I think, two Type-A - connectors, not Type-C, so I go through apple's USB-A, HDMI, C to C adapter dongle). Also I have a USB 3.0 switch to switch the keyboard, mouse, and webcam to a different computer. So it's *possible* an adapter in the chain is having issues. I just noticed it on the Tahoe update (which again, borked my computer enough so the apple store guy couldn't even do a revive on it).

See if slowing the mouse double-click speed changes anything in System Settings > Mouse.

Do you have any third party mouse driver installed?

I only use the built-in software, and I have not seen any difference at all in clicking - either with the built-in trackpad or a third party mouse.

As already recommended, try uninstalling the third party driver (or updating it, if applicable).

Uninstalled. No change.

Went back into Settings and dialled Double Click Speed way back to 2 out of 10.

Success. Everything is back to normal.

Logitech settings are backed up in case I need them again.

Ah, missed this. But unfortunately, I originally never installed any additional software installed for my mouse. But I did go to try it with the software (in case there was a firmware update, it had been awhile), no dice.

I've tried double-click all the way slow, all the way fast, resetting the mouse itself, unplugging/replugging, with the mouse's software (mine is a Corsair mouse, so iCUE), and without, (also on-device memory, and without). Blew air under the mouse button, in case something was stuck there.

No matter what, I get extra clicks sometimes on Tahoe. It does abate a little with slowest double-click speed, but nothing completely remedies the situation.

I use a Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad, no issues like that at all with Tahoe. Is yours a 3rd party, e.g., Logitech, that may have drivers installed on your Mac?

I’ve been noticing extra click events, such as the Stats widget on the menu bar, a click will open then immediately close the details pane. Other menus or panes see a similar effect, often I have to hold the mouse button down to get to what I want.

i have not attempted to change the mouse double click sensitivity from what it was on the previous macOS version. Did that help?

I have a similar problem. I'm on 26.1 but since before that update I've had to click things more than once for them to work ('closing' an app, clicking a tab, etc). All of my stuff is Apple so that's no excuse.

I do have Apple Support left from when I bought my Mac but there's no way of getting hold of them so I guess that's just some sales bs.

Options+ is up to date. It tells me all the mouse and keyboard firmware is up to date.

So, you tried the update part of the troubleshooting. How about the uninstall part?

But this problem is not exclusive to Bluetooth devices. It also happens with older Apple USB mice cabled via the multi port (Cougar DS 10 Docking Station).

The 'no click' issue is particularly bad in Finder. I can navigate to folders, but cannot open any files. The only way in is via the spacebar. Same with Calendar and spreadsheets.

It's now impossible to place a cursor into a data field and revise text. I have to delete and re-enter a revised version.

Plenty of work to do, so off to Apple Store tomorrow to get back on track.
