Bluetooth issues on iPhone 17 Pro Max running iOS 26

I am constantly getting unwanted connections, disconnections, no connection etc all while the iPhone tells me I’m connected. Yesterday I’m on a call using my AirPods Pro and suddenly, audio switches to my watch speaker. Many times my phone says I’m connected but I’m not. And audio stay on AirPods feature does not work all the time. My CarPlay grabs it. I’m on a call with my AirPods Pro working on my iPad and the iPad grabs the audio. Then sends it back to the phone. It is so frustrating.

oh and by the how many of you see your iPhone randomly automatically mutes itself. It’s just sitting on the counter while I’m on a call with my AirPods Pro and the phone literally just mutes itself. Very fostering.

Haven't tested long term, but these settings have worked well for me so far:

🚧 Maximum Stability Mode (CarPlay + AirPods Pro)

✅ Disable all wake‑trigger behaviors

These are the biggest offenders.

  • Raise to Wake
  • Settings → Display & Brightness → Raise to Wake → Off
  • Tap to Wake
  • Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Tap to Wake → Off
  • Attention Aware Features
  • Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Attention Aware Features → Off
  • Haptic on Wake
  • Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Haptics → Turn off “System Haptics”

These prevent micro‑wake events that cause Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth renegotiation.

✅ Lock down Wi‑Fi behavior

We want the phone to stay on one network and avoid band switching.

  • Auto‑Join Hotspot Off
  • Wi‑Fi Assist Off
  • Private Wi‑Fi Address Off (for your car)
  • Limit IP Address Tracking Off (for your car)

This prevents the phone from trying to “optimize” connections mid‑drive.

✅ Lock down Bluetooth behavior

These reduce Bluetooth LE chatter and renegotiation.

  • Turn off “Nearby Interactions”
  • (Used for U1/U2 chip proximity features)
  • Turn off “Find My network”
  • (Stops background BLE pings)
  • Disable “SharePlay in CarPlay”
  • (Prevents Bluetooth handoffs)

✅ Reduce background radio churn

These settings stop the phone from waking radios for background tasks.

  • Background App Refresh → Off for all but essentials
  • Siri Suggestions → Off
  • Significant Locations → Off
  • Location Services → System Services → disable non‑critical items

This reduces the number of times the phone wakes itself while connected to CarPlay.

✅ Optional but highly effective

These are the “nuclear options” — not required, but they help.

  • Disable Always‑On Display
  • Disable Live Activities
  • Disable Lock Screen widgets
  • Turn off Apple Watch temporarily

The Apple Watch in particular is a known trigger — it constantly negotiates BLE channels.

Using my phone in the car is like playing the lottery. Every time I get a call it connects, drops and sometimes reconnects. Same happens when using ChatGPT in voice mode. I am running 26.1, tried enabling and disabling every Bluetooth option. Super frustrated because I switched to apple after years of having an android. There are also buggy issues where I have to hit send 3 times to get the text message sent, sometimes the buttons don’t click in the browser and I have to restart the browser. Is this how it always is with a new iPhone?

I appreciate your frustration, and I share it as well. But since you came from Android, just know that this is unusual for Apple. I ran a tech company with 35 employees and about 50 computers (because some of our computers were dedicated to running equipment or maintaining the network.). Only three of our computers were PCs. The rest were all Macs. And it was the PCs that gave us all the problems. I'm hoping Apple gets this thing figured out soon.

The only problem I’m having is that my AirPods Pro 3 won’t stay connected to my 17 Pro max for more than a couple hours. I have to put my earbuds back in their case for 5 minutes or so, until my phone finally decides that it’s no longer connected to my earbuds. Once my Bluetooth settings show that my earbuds are no longer connected, I can pull my earbuds back out and start using them again

I have the AirPods 3 an the only reason why I got them is because I could locate them inside my house on FindMy, and I could send a sound to the case. Since I updated to iOS 26 the feature to find them is not available, the sound goes off randomly and not when I click to ping them. My AirTags are also pinging randomly.

I wish they could fix the Bluetooth issue soon!

I recently upgraded to the iPhone 17 Pro Max running on iOS 26.5 (current update) but it seems to have a bluetooth connection problem. I’m using Openrun Pro by Shockz which is a bone conducting wireless headset. Used to work perfectly on my 15 Pro Max and my Samsung S23 Ultra. My headset will disconnect after a few seconds during a call but works perfectly when listening to music... Sometimes while driving and the headset is off and on charge the phone will disconnect from the car during calls as well..

Is it a bug?

Is it a setting to be changed?

What could it be???

Is this issue known to exist with the iPhone 17 pro as well (Not pro max) ? Because I just got the 17 pro max and I’m experiencing these issues. I thought my phone might have been a refurbished phone and Verizon was getting over on me. But now I’m seeing that this is a known issue for pro max users.

Most of the Bluetooth issues I’m experiencing is with my 2nd gen AirPods in that the call just cuts out, and switching to speaker sometimes resolves the issue, sometimes not. Meanwhile I have multiple bars while this is happening.
