Yes I waited 15 seconds and the apple logo appeared but the screen is still doing the ghost touches. This has happened a few times before but it has always gone away within roughly 20 min so I thought it would resolve itself today but it has been like this for about 5 hours

Ghost touches and missed touches are a symptom of a problem with a screen-protective film or a protective case, or more commonly a problem with the iPhone display or digitizer hardware.

if you have no film and no protective case installed and still have ghost or missed touches, then you have failing hardware.

You phone does not have a virus unless it has been jailbroken and that is not something that can be done by accident. You are going to have to describe in more detail what happens when you try to restart it, as opposed to switching it off 5 times.

The first thing to try is a Force Restart.

  • Press and quickly release Volume up
  • Press and quickly release Volume down
  • Press and HOLD side button until the Apple logo appears. This could take up to 15 seconds before you see the logo and you have to ignore anything else on the screen during that time. If you do not see the logo, then try again as it may take a couple of attempts to get the speed and sequence of the key presses correct.

i just tried it but it didn’t work. The phone is still really laggy and I can’t get into any apps. I’ve tried going to settings and doing the software update but it keeps jumping me out of settings
  • Was it performed correctly where you saw the Apple logo after holding the side button and the phone restarted on its own, without any other action needed on your part?
  • What happened when you said it did not work?
  • Previously you said it could not be restarted, so did it restart?

I cannot rule out a hardware problem, such as the Digitizer built into the screen. When the Digitizer fails, your phone will register "ghost" touches so tapping an app may not work or you may see the screen respond in a way where you are not initiating the tap. For the digitizer, it would require a screen replacement.

Before scheduling service, you may want to try a Factory Reset using a computer. You would need a backup to restore any data, since this will wipe the iPhone and then you would restore the data from the backup.

I assume the screen is not cracked at all. If that is the case then troubleshooting is not going to do any good and you will need to get the screen replaced.

Ghost touches, did you mention that before?

That would suggest a failed screen.
