Cannot use extended screen on iPad Air

I can only use iPad Air M3 with iPadOS 26 in mirror display, not extended. I want to display one window on my iPad, e.g., Google Classroom assignment, YouTube video, Google Doc, or PDF, to the classroom on the external monitor in extended display mode, and still view, for example, see a seating chart on the iPad and not broadcast that window to the class. However, support informs me that the iPad must be tethered to an external monitor via a cable connection to enable extended display. Please tell me this is not true! I thought iPads were for mobility in a classroom. Apparently, the new iPad will be reduced to using an app to control the extended display function on my MacBook Pro. Better than a doorstop.

Using a wireless AirPlay connection, you can only mirror your iPad's screen. While AirPlay fundamentally does not support extended display, some Apps can stream video to the external monitor while the iPad display can be used independently.

By contrast, when using a wired USB-C or HDMI connection to an external display, you have considerably more flexibility. The wired connection will support an extended display - allowing the two screens to operate fully independently - or as a mirrored display.

Whether of not iPad and iPadOS will ever be able to support extended display over AirPlay is unknown. Apple invite submission of comments and feature requests via its Product Feedback portal. If you would like to see a specific feature or functionality in a future version of iPadOS, this would be the most appropriate channel through which to make a request:

while I never attempted to what you do with an air then I were under the impression it would work at least with a pro

you comment as if you expect apple to read it but

these forums are user helping other users like yourself, it's sort of going

to a physical apple store and asking other customers there advice

you may stumble across somebody who had experiences extented display output with an air model

but if you really wish official stance and to complain to apple then if it was me then I would try
