Is it safe to update iPad mini 6 (A15) from iPadOS 16.5.1 to 18.7.1?

I have an iPad mini 6 (A15), about 2–3 years old, still on iPadOS 16.5.1. I often play demanding games like Genshin Impact, PUBG Mobile, and Wild Rift on max settings with an external cooler. Battery lasts around 2.5 hours under load. Is it safe to update to iPadOS 18.7.1, or should I stay on 16.5.1? Any issues with performance, battery, or failed updates?

Yes, you should update to iPadOS 18.7.1 - as this update includes important system and security updates for your iPad. If you value the security and integrity of your iPad, you should always apply "point" security updates when they are available. iPadOS 16.5.x is now three major versions behind current supported software - and exposes unpatched security vulnerabilities.

You also have the option to upgrade your iPad mini to iPadOS 26. For this, you might be more circumspect - as being early in its lifecycle, you might choose to delay updating to this version until available updates for iPadOS 18.x cease.
