Unable to add outlook.com email account to Apple Mail on Mac

I recently upgraded to macOS 26 (Tahoe). I have a problem in Apple Mail when I want to add any of several Outlook.com email accounts that I have. I can open these accounts through webmail (office.com) and through the Outlook App on my Mac, so I know that all is well with passwords and 2FA. However, when I try to add these email accounts in Apple Mail or when I try through General / Internet Accounts / Add Account I get the message: "Authentication Failed: Failed to Authenticate. Please try again later." When I then go to the Microsoft Exchange window that I am then sent to (there is no longer an Outlook.com option to select) and add the email address and the correct password I get the error message: "unable to verify account name or password". I am using the correct account name and password. I've tried this with each of my outlook.com email accounts and none of them add - all give me these same error messages. I've added several gmail accounts, an iCloud account and another account with no problems.

Any help gratefully received as I'm having to work around this issue viewing emails through two separate Apps and having two separate Calendar apps to run and cross check too.

Thanks

Jonathan

For me the solution on my apple mail on MacBook Air Tahoe 26.0.1 turned out to be deleting all VPN configurations then use a manual SMTP port - in my case 587, use TSL, authentication password & then reselecting Automatically manage connections. After restarting my mail was working again for all 5 accounts
