Weird white borders around icons and widgets in iOS 26

What is the point of the weird white borders around icons and widgets in iOS 26? Did Apple not test this design with single-color wallpaper setups? Is there a color/gradient combination that makes the experience less awful in both light and dark modes? I have reduce transparency, increase contrast, and differentiate without color turned on.

Of course they tested it. It's part of the new Liquid Glass, which is integrated into iOS 26. I actually really like the new Liquid Glass. You can tone down the effects, by going to Settings > Accessibility - and turn off Increased Contrast and Reduce Transparency. If you don't like the animations, in the same Accessibility page is Motion and you can turn ON Reduce Motion.
