Missing 1:1 video recording option on iPhone 17 Pro Max (iOS 26)

Hello everyone,

I recently upgraded from an iPhone 14 Pro (running iOS 18.5) to an iPhone 17 Pro Max on iOS 26, and I’ve noticed that I can no longer record videos in the 1:1 aspect ratio.

On my previous device, there was a neat little trick I would switch to Photo mode, and then drag the shutter button to the right. That would start recording a square (1:1) video automatically. I used this all the time for social media content.

However, on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, that method no longer works. The Camera app now always records in 16:9, and I can’t find any setting or option to adjust the aspect ratio for video recording.

If there’s a new way to record 1:1 videos directly from the Camera app, I’d really appreciate some guidance.

I don’t want to download any third party apps.

It’s still available but the method to access the feature has been modified.

To record square (1:1) video on iPhone, open the camera's Photo mode, tap the upward arrow at the top, tap the aspect ratio icon at the bottom, and select Square. Then, touch and hold the shutter button to start recording a square video.

Interesting, it worked the last time I tried it, but not now. I’m getting exactly what you are.

I tried that method as well opening Photo mode → tapping the arrow → selecting “Square” → then holding the shutter button to record — but it still defaults to 16:9 video on my iPhone 17 Pro Max (iOS 26).

The preview shows the 1:1 frame, but as soon as I start recording, it switches back to widescreen. I’ve attached a screen recording to show what happens.
